Cities across the state held last Monday elections in a rehearsal for a looming campaign. Dispatches report Russia has evacuated Korea under Japanese control though Port Arthur remains unruly. Manchuria houses about 300,000 Russians while Japan fields a similar force in Korea as forces move toward the Yalu.

County Commissioners approve gopher bounty and ferry lease
The county board met this week and approved a gopher bounty of two cents per head from April 1 to May 10 and one cent from May 16 to June 1. The Winona ferry lease was awarded to J H Wishek Ashley at 85 dollars per year. Franz Wolf was named to replace Andreas Kraft as Third District Assessor. A street layout to improve Cass Canon crossing was granted. Protests by Superintendent Tucker and Station Agent Byrne cited 400 feet spacing concerns. Minutes full text to be published next week.

Wedding crowds pack county farm for Backhaus Ohlhauser union
One of the county’s largest crowds gathered last Sunday as H. W. Backhaus and Miss Karolina Ohlhauser were united in marriage in the groom’s parents’ farmhouse near Linton. Rev. Karl Schroeder conducted the ceremony. Attendance was estimated between 156 and 200 amid a day of dancing and a plentiful dinner before the couple began housekeeping on the groom’s expansive Beaver valley farm.

Death in the Flood Drowns Man Near Braddock Hazelton
Jujigs C. Klabunde, about forty-two, drowned when a flood from melted snow surged through a river bed near his farm west of Braddock and north of Hazelton. The body was recovered in a corral after his horse was swept away. he left a wife and three daughters. He had protested railroad grade changes that redirected the stream. Life insurance totaled 4,500.
