The Department of Education outlines a program to assist residents of Iowa with handicaps from birth disease accident or emotional conditions. It aims to prepare them for remunerative work within their abilities and is not a charity.

Real Estate Board Elects New Officers

Palo Alto county Real Estate board at its meeting elected three new officers including Mayor John Brown of Emmetsburg as president, Luthar Thompson of Rolfe as vice president, and H. C. Helgen of Emmetsburg as secretary treasurer. The group now includes members from Pocahontas, Rolfe, West Bend, Ringsted, Graettinger and Emmetsburg. Only members of a real estate board can qualify for the title of realtor.

Suit Filed Against Fort Dodge Baking Co in Palo Alto County

Two damage suits filed in Palo Alto County District Court allege injuries from a Sept. 19, 1954 car truck collision near Depew. Mrs. Schlickelman seeks 515,000 for permanent injuries to herself and 25,000 for her daughter Lois. Donald Jensen sued for damages and Mrs. Schlickelman’s husband claims 25,000 for Lois. The Fort Dodge Baking Co operated as Pfaff Baking Co that year. Attorneys are Smith and Hanson for the plaintiffs.

Band Boosters Show Set for Monday at High School

The Emmetsburg Band Boosters plan a benefit show Monday March 7 at the high school auditorium. A six member Dez team will compete against a country six member team. Tickets available at Needham's Cleaners or at the door.

Rock Island Sued for 550000 in Iowa auto-train crash case

Carl Farb and his wife sue the Rock Island railroad and two employees for 3155,000 to 3240,000 in damages plus medical and executor claims. They allege negligence in the Sept 16, 1934 Emmetsburg crash that killed Edwin Farb and Mrs. Nellie Johnson and injured Carl and his wife. The petition cites failure to sound warnings, slow or stop the train, and improper equipment and signals under Iowa law.

The Pallo Alto county Red Cross chapter held its 1955 drive kickoff at the Methodist church hall in Emmetsburg. Fund Drive committee members J Edgar Smith Archie Pertl and Henry Willingham chaired separate county areas. Rev C H Johnson Bethany Lutheran pastor spoke on wartime Red Cross service aiding servicemen and families and bridging home and service life both in war and peacetime.

$70 000 Mot el to Be Erected West of City

Plans announced for a brick and stone motel costing about 70 900 with 14 units on an 11 acre tract at Highways IS and 17. Clarence A. Andersen of Andersen Construction Co said the project is the largest investment here this year and will be on land from the Reeves Riverdate Ranch. Construction will start after frost and the motel should be ready by late summer. The E shaped building will have 32 by 26 foot manager quarters, six 16 by 19 foot units, six 16 by 14 foot units, and two 30 by 16 foot units. Each unit includes baths, furnishings, and heating by a central furnace with thermostatic control.

Thunderbolts Form New Motorcycle Club in Area

The Thunderbolts, a new motorcycle and motorscooter enthusiasts group, organized in the area with Albert Al Nesshoefer of Mallard as president. Officers include Jerry Capesius as vice president Gene Saylor as secretary Paul Johnson as treasurer Dick Wills as road captain Fritz Johnson as referee. Members include John Saylor Fred Schutz Dan Conlon Bob Laubenthal Jim Morrow and Bert Marotta Dennis Krat. The club affiliated with the American Motorcycle Association aims to promote safe motorcycling, sanction field trials, and win public respect for cyclists, to counter outlaw riders in other regions. They plan to attend a Webster city meeting on April 2.

The Spencer Nesbitt Bottle Co. sues Paul Cornelius of Fenton for 4307.97 in district court over a Sept 18 1954 crash that damaged both firms bottling truck. Harrassed by a 17 person eight vehicles multi-accident near Emmetsburg, Cornelius allegedly lost control with prize dogs in his car, causing a collision with Darrell Kruckman 19 Webb driving the Nesbitt truck.
