Agricultural Imports Decline Amid Drought and Grain Losses
A study by Iowa State College economists notes imports of all competitive agricultural products fell below the 10-year average from July 1934 to March 1935, with seeds and sugar as exceptions. Fruit imports excluding bananas dropped 25 percent, vegetable oils 14 percent, wool 56 percent, and eggs and dairy products 78 percent. sugar rose 4 percent, fields 186 percent above. Drought most severely hit grain and forage crops, oats and barley cut about half, corn exports minor. Charles B. Lanus, 49, brother of Mrs. Rubel, died of heart trouble in Pocahontas, leaving a widow, a daughter, and several brothers and sisters.

Best Roosters Often Sold Early as Broilers
Culling of candy cockerels for broilers risks losing vigorous breeding birds says WN. F. Waters of Iowa State College Poultry Husbandry. Band identified young cockerels and isolate from discard mates. Recommend keeping about 50 percent more breeding cockerels than needed, with later selections. Proportion of Water Needed For Corn Crop
H D Hughes of Iowa State College explains that weeds steal water from corn, reducing yields. He notes corn needs about 208 pounds of water per 1 pound produced, while weeds like cocklebur lambsquarter ragweed consume far more water per pound, lowering corn output. Oats and clover vary in water needs. sorghum uses least water, while alfalfa and flax use most. Cultivation mainly benefits weed control in Iowa corn fields.
