Sidewalk Art Show to Offer Cash and Bond prizes

Nearly 100 entries are slated for Emmetsburg’s first Sidewalk Art Show on Saturday with $100 cash and a savings bond awarded in adult and student divisions. Judge Jaca E. Olds, educator and artist from State College of Iowa, will assess works across painting sculpture prints and more. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event in downtown Emmetsburg from 10 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. Entries were received by May 24 and late submissions may still be considered. entry blanks available at the C of C office with no jury fee. Prizes include best of show and category ribbons.

Pocahontas REC To Hold 31st Annual Meeting

Pocahontas Rural Electric Cooperative will hold its 31st annual meeting at Pocahontas Community School auditorium on Wednesday evening June 7. The program opens at 7 30 p m with a concert by Pocahontas Community High School. Registration starts at 7 45 p m. Lloyd Simonson of Emmetsburg, president, presides. Clyde L. Peterson of Laurens is secretary, Earl Kerns of Mallard treasurer, and manager George M Stockdale reports on operations. Five directors to be elected include four for three year terms and one for one year. Nomination committee led by Vereil Wendell of Laurens names multiple candidates from Palmer Ayrshire Laurens and Mallard with vacancies for unexpired terms.

Circus Set Up In Emmetsburg By Carson and Barnes

A four ring European style circus arrives at Emmetsburg Sunday night for performances at the county fairgrounds starting at 4 pm. The three convoys roll in at daybreak to erect the tent city, promising the traditional spectacle of a bustling circus morning.

The Chamber of Commerce will hold its regular monthly Smorgasbord today at noon at the Emmetsburg Country Club. Seek Women Donors For Bloodmobile Visit

Editorial notes that women donate far less than men and urges women to donate when the bloodmobile comes to Emmetsburg on June 4 and 2. Dr Warold Brereton explains there is no physiological barrier to women giving blood five times yearly. Mrs Francis Conway is blood program chairman with other committee members listed for the drive.

Registration dates for Emmersi ng Jr Baseball program

Registration for the summer program opens Monday June 5 at Legion Park. Boys born on or before June 5 are eligible, with teen and preteen groups assigned to 1 2 hour windows. Older youths may register later or by calling Mileham. Practice runs 6 to 7 p.m. with leagues starting June 8 and ending July 28 to allow August vacations.

Ambulance Service To Begin July First At Palo Alto County

Palo Alto County Hospital plans an ambulance service starting July 1 1967 after funeral directors discontinue private service. Board of Supervisors and Hospital Board endorse centralized service to extend patient care on highways and homes. Ambulances to be dispatched anywhere anytime with priority to critical calls and minimal siren use. Ambulance orderlies to staff the service under safety rules and duties.

Two Awards To Grethen War Victim

Galen D. Grethen awarded posthumously from the Republic of Vietnam with the Military Merit Medal and the Gallantry Cross with Palm. Two other soldiers also received the awards on April 16, 1986. Citations praise courageous combatants who aided ARVN forces against the Red Wave and died in their first mission, mourned by American and Vietnamese comrades.

Baby Girl Born to Munderloh Family in Nebraska

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Munderloh of Pender Nebraska welcomed a baby girl born May 30. Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs George Bryant of Emmetsburg. Mrs Munderloh is the former Georgia Bryant. This is the couple's first child and the Bryants' first grandchild.

Drought Break Brings Hope With Rain in Palo Alto County

A rare four day spell of steady rains ends a long drought for Palo Alto County farmers. Weatherman Louis Gunn recorded 2.19 inches since May 22, bringing relief to newly planted corn and bean crops. Memorial Day weather had been gloomy before Wednesday morning when sunshine returned.

Sign Up Now For Library Summer Reading Program

Registration for the annual Summer Reading Program continues through June 3, with reporting starting after. Eligible are children in third through sixth grades. Reporting runs Monday to Friday. books may be logged Monday to Saturday. The first three books must be read and reported by June 16, and all 12 books by July 4. The program ends with a closing event on Saturday morning July 15 inviting all participants.
