Five Die In Des Moines River Launch Disaster At Ottumwa
A gasoline launch carrying Mr and Mrs W H Powell W F Powell Mrs Bessie Stevens and young Anna Powell was swept over a dam on the Des Moines river near Ottumwa. The engine failed and a strong current drove the boat through a cutoff and over the dam where it capsized. Rescuers found the craft a mile downstream and recovered all bodies after a search aided by dynamite blasts.

Father and Son Perish in Well Rescue Near Luther
George Tipler a well digger and his fourteen year old son died while attempting a rescue on a farm one mile west of Luther. The boy, lowered by rope into a 110 foot well, was alive but could not grip the rope and both men drowned when Tipler descended after him. A group of Rebekahs arrived at the widow Boone's home for a picnic when the tragedy occurred.

Slow speed collision blocks Great Western routes
A head on collision occurred near Marshalltown between the Des Moines Kansas City Limited and the Twin City Chicago special on the Chicago Great Western railway.
