Infirmary Inmate John Schaffer Drowns in River
Sunday morning boys spotted clothing on the river near the Power House and later a man’s face surfaced. John Schaffer, a county infirmary inmate and former master tailor, was found dead in the water. He lived near Oberlin and Lorain and had recently worked on the infirmary farm. Superintendent D. Johnson lamented the loss of a trusted foreman and vowed proper burial if the body remains unclaimed. Schaffer, about 55, was married with two daughters and a son, believed to be in Cleveland.
