A courtroom scene reports young defendants arraigned with adults before Judge Webber on petit larceny charges. A ten year old boy, neatly dressed, pleads with spectators as prosecutors and peers reflect on crime and punishment amid a hushed court.
A city system compels public offenders to work on streets and improvements to pay fines. Critics say it shifts value to the service board while underpaying workers, costing the city money and harming those unable to pay. Officer Baker notes the safety board bears losses, urging reform to credit the system to the safety board rather than the service board.
J E Gray of Grace Court proposed to deed the city strip north of the Black River for a park expansion and roadway widening. Council referred the proposal to the buildings and land committee and a request was made to Erie street committee to install a board crossing on West Avenue. The street is forty five feet wide, stretching from Lake Avenue to West River Street, and the council wants to view a plot before acting.
A Thursday Elyria report says a box car derailed on the Lakeshore at Wakeman. One car left the track and was damaged but the wrecking crew re-railed it and traffic was not delayed.
Four Wellington men faced arraignment for violating the local option law and selling intoxicating liquor. None pled guilty as Judge Webber presided in common pleas court. Several defendants entered not guilty pleas while others await trial. Names include Charles Flyon Henry Slife John Muller Herbert Linaley Ed Hanford Andrew Boda Charles Hall Joseph Majoras and Farkas case details involve grand larceny and stabbing wounds. The four Wellington defendants named Vader Barna E Limmel John Wadeworth J H Yooum face pending action.
Judge Webber entered nolles in the cases of William and Edna Nelson and three others suspected in the death of Bud Nelson at Oberlin. Prosecutors failed to gain evidence. the case notes poison found in Nelson’s system and suggests the defendants were under suspicion but not charged. A separate suit follows where John Curry sues George Meckart for damages for injuries from a bicycle collision on Tenth avenue.
Probate Judge Hinman ruled the Lake Shore railroad may appropriate George Ford land though the Ford family protested lack of lawful basis. A jury will determine just compensation as the railroad nears securing an entire right of way despite objections that land use is not for an eligible purpose.
Secret indictments were returned against four Wellington men for selling liquor in a dry community. Additional alleged violators are being sought by Sheriff Sailsbury, with more arrests promised. In Columbus on the eve of the final campaign week Republican Chairman Dick predicts a Roosevelt landslide based on 190% congressional gains, while Democratic Chair Garber plans to reveal estimates Sunday before election. Democrats claim control of several Ohio districts and a potential house majority, with Republicans citing a few districts as safe. Prohibitionists draw from miner Democrats and new Republican recruits but no seats expected. Uncle Joe Cannon and J Adam Hede are to address Franklin County voters next Tuesday evening, under Buckeye Club auspices, promising a lively turnout.
Tom Miller, accused of trying to murder his wife, was captured by Lorain police after hiding in the woods. He gave no statement when arraigned and was bound over to the grand jury. The injured Mrs. Miller remains in hospital but shows improvement.
The opening night crowd for the new opera house on November 17 drew heavy interest with seat prices up to $100 on the ground floor. DeWolf Hopper will star in Wang, a comic opera, and a drawing for the best seats is planned. Meanwhile a Republican meeting in Henriette drew praise for Harmony quartet performances with strong applause. Lorain headlines report Mrs Whitford dying of heart failure after years of good health in the city.
Two men from LaGrange were badly hurt when a hay wagon collided with a trolley near Olmsted, fifteen miles east of the city on the O and S W line. Miles Wheeler suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries and may die. Bert Braynard had hip injuries and a broken right arm. The wagon overturned, horse kicked the men, and traffic halted about an hour before they were brought to Elyria for treatment.
Grosvenor released figures predicting Roosevelt and Fairbanks will win forty one electoral votes in New England and ninety votes in New York New Jersey Pennsylvania and other states total aggregate 831 votes Parker to receive 151 votes across a list of southern and western states He also notes three votes in Montana eight in Maryland Nevada and Colorado barely in doubt for Parker while Nevada and Colorado remain weak for Roosevelt and Fairbanks He expects a solid Republican majority in the House and a presidential victory in the end.
Poles in the county packed a Roosevelt rally at Grafton, outnumbering Americans at recent events. Polish speaker Lescedenzky energized the crowd with Teddy Roosevelt remarks praising labor policies, while Attorney Frank Stevens delivered a top campaign speech. The scene included the Grafton band and a red parade, with calls for labor protections and local insurance plans discussed amid strong enthusiasm.
The case Buell Peck v. E F Sanford was dismissed by Judge Web ber Tuesday. Peck sold property in Ridgeville and Sanford voided payment after discovering the description was wrong. Peck sought to force payment claiming the salt was disclosed.
Elyria citizens hear a proposal to form a mutual benefit assurance to cut fire insurance costs. H. M. Andess argues residents pay excess to big French insurers, suggesting each person contribute a dollar to build a citizen owned fund within ten years to replace commercial coverage.
Councilman Worthington urged the railroad to install proper guard gates at the Huron Street and Lake Avenue crossings. He called the crossings dangerous and moved to order gates, but the measure was carried over to the next meeting without a vote.
Charles B. Clark, a candy merchant about seventy, died Friday night at 11 o'clock from injuries suffered Thursday evening when his team collided with a telephone pole on North Ridge road near Elyria. He lay unconscious at his home as his wife, who rushed from Oberlin road, kept vigil. Dr. Hubbell reported most ribs crushed. wagon wheel passed over him from shoulder to hip. Remains were moved to his Oberlin road home.
