A jumble of 1900s era ads and notices includes a millinery and barber shop listing at 172 Cleveland Street Elyria, a wood framed ice contract note, room for rent at 119 East Bridge Street, a job bid and a modest real estate sale near Glenwood and Columbus, plus testimonials for One Minute Cough Cure by F S Mahon of Hampton Georgia and assorted travel and medical ad copy for Big Four Route and Kings New Discovery.
A Winnchester Indiana resident M M Austin credits Dr Kings New Life Pills with curing his wife of a severe illness after good doctors failed. The pills are said to aid stomach and liver troubles, relieve constipation, and are sold for 25 cents at H J Bundy’s drug store.
The council discussed paving over one mile of streets including Middle avenue to the town line Fourth Street Earl Court and Second Street from West avenue to Chestnut Street A water street grate was approved and Middle avenue may gain eight foot strips along the curb to reduce dust A sewer system debate arose with engineers saying a trench is needed to lay cross renewals and road work will follow paving efforts by the county commissioners
The town laughed at DS Troxel and McKinley who boasted cars built under their supervision. A Wednesday noon prank closed the route between Hlgrin and Ridgeville, delaying the planned race. Willam Wallhead Jr. escaped serious injury after a wagon accident when horses bolted, knocking him against the wagon and wheel.
Doubt arises whether WP Colgan of Elyria died by drowning in the Philippines on May 6. His mother Mrs Ann Colgan of East Arenas has heard nothing of his death, despite a letter to The Reporter signed by his company sergeant. An inquiry with the War Department at Washington will be conducted. Edward Golick fined five dollars for intoxication. Frank Dimpter fined one dollar for disorderly conduct. Friday and Saturday nights feature a high class vaudeville and farce show headlined by America’s sweetest singer Edith Doyte with Little Elsie Keep, Roderick W Roderick, Claire Tuttle, Clara Kelly, Ed Benard, and Tatts comedy wire acts. Prices 15 25 85 cents evening 10 cents matinee. Little Elsie to host Saturday matinee reception. Ladies with coupons and drug seats admitted for 00 before 6 pm Friday.
Mandeville, arrested on a humane charge of neglecting his minor child, left Elyria about two and a half years ago and later joined the Volunteers of America. His hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning.
Paul North of Cleveland and other State Fish Commission members have quietly investigated conditions at the islands. They report trap nets forbidden by law set in the waters and large catches of black bass shipped to Cleveland Detroit and other cities by steamer. Proceedings will be commenced against known violators and boats may face fines for carrying the fish.
Mayor King may authorize extending the Reichlin murder investigation as two detectives build evidence and more may join next week. Detective Jake Mintz of Cleveland voices confidence but cites insufficient proof for a jury. Two theories explain the crime linking motive, with grand jury action possible. Goldsmith remains on the ground awaiting developments. The case is described as highly peculiar with no further comment until proof appears.
At the Tuesday council meeting the city solicitor was directed to draft ordinances governing street car track sprinkling by street railway firms and the speed and registration of automobiles. The bond of the tax commissioners was filed at 31000. Frank Avery of Oak Street died from blood poisoning at 48, and is survived by a wife and an adopted daughter. funeral set for Thursday morning.
Court records show Amelia Mandeville petitions the Court of Common Pleas for divorce on grounds of wilful absence and gross neglect of duty. Married in 1980, they have six children aged 6 to 22. Attorney A E Lawrence represents Amelia. Separately Electa M Underhill petitions to raise her annual support from 300 to 500.
Members of Elijah Hardenpost and Ladies of the GAR with families are asked to meet in the ME church Sunday May 24 at 9 30 for memorial services in the auditorium. Ex soldiers are urged to attend. DW Hyland Commander JE Burrell Adjutant.
