In Scribner, Frank M Chapman notes a nightingale singing in short phrases with pauses, lacking continuous crescendo, yet surprisingly loud and versatile. He recalls hearing a Cambridge nightingale during afternoon chorus and aligns its nocturnal habits with Shakespearean imagery of the bird.

Future life through animal factories and new evolution
A series of speculative ideas on producing life forms from protoplasm, with references to Ostwald and Loeb. The piece argues science could slowly create life rivaling higher animals, potentially leading to a new order of humanity, while noting the author is a chemist not a biologist. It weaves in war commentary on Japan, China, and England, and ends with consumer ads for Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea and Early Risers laxative.
