A fragmentary diary style account describes a voyage from Liv to New York aboard the Oceanic. Harsh seas and hail cause fear among passengers while officers and stewards manage the scene with nerve tonics and warnings.
The opening day of the Chi Convention in Elyria featured bright weather and swelling crowds entering the city. Delegates gathered in four churches with headquarters at the First Mor church and other venues hosting sessions on Thursday and Friday mornings, including addresses, devotional periods, and junior activities.
Peter Sleif of Carlisle, 70, was jostled by a crowd in a Cleveland shoe store last Saturday and discovered his six dollars missing. He recalls an offensively looking black woman who brushed him as he entered and suspects she took the money.
Pat Eagan Joe Baker Georga Moyers and Guat Hill were fined five dollars and costs each after intoxication charges in police court Tuesday morning.
Court of Common Pleas L W Lockhart sues for divorce from Elizabeth Lockhart on gross neglect of duty and extreme cruelty. They reside at Lorsin, married in 1887 and have four children. W L Hughes is plaintiff attorney. CG Cox sues Nathan Baum for 50 dollars commission on sale of an interest in ten acre lot on Cleveland street. Baum repudiated the contract after sale. EG and HG Johnson are plaintiffs attorneys.
Waldo Foote sues Sol Mendlessohn in the court of common pleas seeking 144.20. He bought a horse for his wife claiming it was sound and gentle, but it was found to have a shoulder disease. Foote seeks repayment. Johnson and Leonard represent him.
Patrick Eagon a Holloway brick maker from Toledo was robbed of over eight dollars near the Lake Shore Yards west of Elyria after arriving by freight from Toledo. He identified the assailant as a tall, slim man in a gray suit with a white Fedora hat, a fellow laborer who fled the scene. The victim was found unconscious beside the track and the money missing. Police hunt the robber while Eagon faces intoxication arrest.
The committee in charge reports everything ready for a lively Fourth of July in Elyria. Merchants have donated generously and the Cleveland Automobile Club supports races and a grand firework display on Broad street. Entries from surrounding towns promise lively, old fashioned festivities to awaken Elyria from years of slumber.
Superintendent LaMarche of American Shipbuilding at Lorain expects the launch of a new United States Transportation Company vessel on the seventh this month, the last of a 15-ship fleet. The 400 foot liner, 50 foot beam, 28 foot depth, will bear a family name and feature modern machinery.
Deputy Frank R Salisbury son of Sheriff Salisbury of Lorain County married Mass Alta Collier daughter of Mr and Mrs George Collier of West Madison Cleveland at seven oclock Wednesday evening in Wellington. Rev Grause officiated using Episcopal rites with Miss Jennie Farsons as bridesmaid and R T Collier as groomsman. Lohengrin march played by Miss Coffee. The couple left for Toledo Thursday to visit friends and will reside in Elyria.
Vermilion Ohio mayor reports no danger to visitors from smallpox. Since May no new village cases, only a nurse connected to Mrs. Henry Brooks contracted the disease. Quarantine kept, patients mostly convalescent, nurse in first stage at hospital. Parks located one mile from detention hospital and half a mile from town.
Louie H Mallet, a B and O brakeman, nearly died in Lorain south yards as two bad order cars moved past. He and Stone's yard crew attempted a coupling when a signal to come ahead was given. Mallet was crushed, three ribs broken on each side, and he remains in precarious condition at Lorain hospital.
The Civil Service Commission announces cadet examinations in several Ohio cities including Cleveland on July 29 80 and 81 for entry into the Revenue Cutter Service. Applicants must be 18 to 25 years old, physically sound and well formed, at least five feet three inches tall, of good moral character, and unmarried. Applications should be made to the Civil Service Commission in Washington.
The executive committee of The Lorain County Good Roads Association proposes a township branch constitution to speed permanent road improvements. It outlines membership, officers, duties of president vice president secretary and treasurer with monthly meetings on the second day and calls for immediate local organization in each township with notices to the county secretary.
James Boylan sues in common pleas over a stock swap with the Adams and Sarber oil concern. He alleges transfers of a corner East Bridge and Ridge street lot were made to defraud him and seeks voiding of the transfers and proper relief. Frits Rudin and P L A Leighly represent him.
The Pittsfeld area is set to gain many new gas wells this summer as work resumes on Augustine Whitney's site, expected to be a strong producer. Drilling will move to residents A Schubert, Mahlon Brown, and Carter, followed by Fred Evans in the southwest part of Russia township.
Katherine Stein and Simon Riley were married at the Stein home in North Amherst on Wednesday at high noon. The bride wore crepe de chine and the ring service was used. The couple departed for a wedding tour to Buffalo and Niagara Falls and will reside at 848 West Second Street after July 15.
Frederick Casey celebrated his sixth birthday anniversary on June 17 with a family dinner at his parents home, Mr and Mrs Frank Casey, in Sheffield township.
An angry scene at James Smith’s funeral in Lorain occurred when the undertaker used an old shabby hearse. Relatives protested and forced a replacement conveyance from a distant source. Smith’s widow, a white woman, is said to be the daughter of his former enslaver.
A prominent educator told a university graduating class that money alone cannot ensure success. He emphasized character as the key to destiny, noting genuine men and women are in short supply and daily duty shapes moral growth. A second grand jury indictment was returned, but Monroe did not respond, and an arrest copy was issued by Prosecutor Keeler.
A team of Hacaway Bros. horses fell over the bank while at Cascade park on Wednesday morning. One horse suffered a severe injury, with the incident described as serious by witnesses.
A loose freight train derailed at the Weat avenue crossing after a switch failed to act. An engine and four cars toppled from the track while several hours passed before the wrecker could realign the derailed equipment and restore service.
Jalis Cohan, an inspector for the Band O road, was run over by a coal car at Lorain on Friday afternoon. He suffered injuries and died within hours. Cohan, under 6 feet tall, was inspecting the air brake when struck by a moving car sent onto the track by a yard engine. He had worked at Lorain four weeks, coming from New York City.
Secretary G M Jones of Oberlin college announces the most prosperous year with 1509 students enrolled, up from 1883 last year, a gain of 137. Total graduates reach 188, including 105 with the A B degree and the MA. ten from the Theological Seminary, eight from the Conservatory of Music, and seven from normal training courses.
An attempted arson at Kipton’s Methodist church occurred Sunday night around 11. The fire was spotted by neighbors, extinguished before significant damage, and investigators determined it was started in the basement by a fire bug. The church sustained only minor damage.
Parmelee Bros filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition in U S district court amid the Broughton bank failure. Liabilities total 551,124.18 with assets at 550. Five notes of 510,000 each tied to the failed Borton banking house stand as major liabilities. C W and F A Parmelee are also individually bankrupt, with smaller liabilities and assets. Parmelees formerly lived in Burton, now Oberlin, Ohio.
A small freight wreck occurred a few miles east of Elyria on Thursday morning delaying traffic for about an hour. The cause was reported as a breaking of the front track of an oil car.
Walter Beal of Wealstreet is found dead from drowning in Black River after slipping on a wet planting rock while fishing. Bystanders alerted. later workers and a coroner examined the scene. Beal, a new Elyria resident, worked as a witchman in the steel plant yards and left a wife and two children.
