Women Operators Prosper in Colorado Mines Across Districts
The article describes a surge of women within Colorado mining, from Empire and Camp Bird areas to Cripple Creek, running mines, financing operations, and even working underground. Boston sisters Mary and Edith Tracy invest in and manage a concentration mill at Empire, while Mrs. Atwood oversees the Atlantic mine, supervising ore processing and repurposing equipment. An eastern teacher turns geological study into copper land ventures, selling newly proven properties. In Cripple Creek, many majors passed to women via inheritance, with men handling day to day mining though women occasionally assume oversight.
