Councilman Baker Arrested on Criminal Assault Charge

Councilman Baker was arrested Friday on a criminal assault charge filed by plumber Perry Reger. The warrant cites an assault on Reger's daughter, with Baker arraigned and held to the grand jury in Tus Court. Bonds set at 1000, Baker bonded through attorney W B Johnston. defense by Johnston.

Belmont Iron Works hit with a reduced bill for railings

The Belmont Iron Works bill for the Washington avenue bridge railing faced a cut of 209.3 dollars after the Public Service Board briefed session. Grace Court residents seek sprinkler cost relief while Hadaway Bros. may have part contract canceled. Sprinkling objections also surfaced as two four inch pipes replace one six inch main along Eastern Helena Boulevard extending 1600 feet.

Large Increase in Number of Pupils in City Schools

The city public schools total 2 674 pupils not counting nearby townships with 146 extra pupils. Ward tallies show about 2001 in first ward and 404 in third ward with other counts cited. An overall pupil total reaches 2 404 with an increase of 220 last year. Six rooms serve 320 pupils. four new rooms planned, with east side building ready for next term. City Pays 100 Dollar Rental Voucher Questioned

The city paid a 100 dollar bill for renting the service board room after Solicitor Johnston submitted a written opinion. He cited a recent Supreme Court decision as supporting the citys legal right to pay despite H M Andresa holding stock in the hotel company. The voucher was sent to Columbus by the state examiner and deemed illegal, later receiving a state department of law opinion noting circumstances might change the case.

Three days before trial the defendant Powdermaker is declared insane and confined in Toledo. His attorneys fled the country to pursue the case, backed by an affidavit from Lee Stroup stating Powdermaker is now insane and the defendant and principal witness. A. Bates Sr declares candidacy for the board of public service expanding the field to six. Bates, commander of the Richard Allen post and noted contractor, has lived in Elyria twenty six years and built several of the city’s fine structures. His construction experience is seen as valuable for the board.

Von Tackey Wins Two Judgments Against Jefferies

Frank von Tackey doing business as The Titusville Oil Company obtained two judgments in the common pleas court. One against Mr and Mrs Jefferies of Wellington for 348 dollars and another for 300 dollars against H C Jefferies. The suits arose from oil delivered under a bond for 600 dollars. The Jefferies defended claiming the oil was worthless and owed 209 dollars. The jury ruled there were no substances to the counterclaim. Elyria Ball Team Schedules Weekend and Week Ahead

Hungarian Laborer Hurt at Old Town Hall Collapse

A Hungarian laborer suffered a dislocation of the right hip and shoulder when a scaffold at the old town hall gave way Friday morning. A pile of brick toppled onto him, causing facial and head cuts. He was treated by Drs. Sampsell and French and transported to the city hospital.

Mayor Proposes Congested Areas Designation for Safety

Mayor Thomas Polmer proposed designating congested city sections to define lines for enforcement of fast driving. He urged automobilists to honk before turns and to take wide curves away from the curb to protect pedestrians. In a separate note, lawyer Henry Ludwig will bury a body, while Kingsley had an accident policy made for Ludwig’s children.

The parents of William Kingsley who drowned at Lorain refused Friday to take the body. They live in Amherst and declined because Kingsley was regarded as an outcast, a brother said.

Father Seeks Police Action Over Youth Thefts

In Hunkyville a Hungarian station keeper brought his twelve year old son to the police station after the boy stole about seven dollars from his father. The father demanded the boy be locked up but the matter was referred to a justice court and settled amicably without arrest.
