Counterfeit Silver Dollars Debited in Cincinnati

The Cincinnati sub-treasury has received new dangerous counterfeit silver dollars from Ohio banks. Experts sent the coins to Washington labeled as counterfeits after failing to identify them locally. The fake coins are cut from Mexican or Guatemalan pieces, with a United States die imitated. The goddess’s hair shows the digits 187 under magnification, and the reverse reveals traces of the original die. A Washington official notes a yearlong influx of such counterfeits, likely shipped from Central America. The counterfeit uses 430-grain Mexican standards, leaving a seven and a half grain margin after grinding. The goddesses’ profile appears dissimilar to the Kennedye, aiding detection for trained eyes.
