Eli Ely a longtime Lake Shore Railroad conductor and Civil War veteran aged 77 died Tuesday in Cleveland after a long service career of forty eight years. Born October 2 1827 in Beaver Ohio he rose from farm youth to join Ohio troops under McCook Frazer and the 150th Ohio earning a lieutenant’s commission. He later resigned in 1903 due to age and heart trouble, receiving a pension for his widow as friends recall his humor and kindness.
A 19th century report discusses Secretary Root's order prohibiting docking, banging, or clipping tails of horses except for trimming to prevent shagginess. T B Fields fined five dollars and costs for refusing a Wade's restaurant meal and John Lawrence fined for intoxication.
Mrs G W Fortin of Elyria returns home after visiting relatives. Mrs James Smith of Lorain visits Mrs C Steward the Fourth. Mr and Mrs F O Gelder and son of Cleveland spend Sunday with A Seymour. John Hinkley protested the possible vacation of Filbert street claiming damages to his corner lot if closed. Ely Realty Co offered to cover damages and even pay attorney fees to support the city, while debates over street widths and a bridge footpath continued.
Mrs Anna Eldridge of Lima visited her parents last week. Families from Cleveland including W Hines, Alva Wilcox, and Will Kneale arrived for summer on the dairy farm. Mrs Jane Root and Mrs J Ward visited in Wallington and Penfield. Mrs Etta Wight hosted with her children in Wellington. Mrs Henry Pomeroy ill. Mrs Petty of New York spending summer with Will Fields.
