Mrs Angeline A Brown an elderly colored resident died Wednesday at 1 30 PM at 81 North Hat avenue after months of paralysis. Born in Wooster Ohio she moved to Elyria fifty years ago and once worked as a hair dresser. Twenty six years ago she fought a Lake Shore construction crew over land and won a settlement after days of battle with clubs and hot water. Funeral at her home Friday at ten.
The Reporter corrects its prior account of the verdict in Judge Hinman's court on Tuesday evening. The judgment amount was $10,603.75.
The tennis court at the South Lorain YMCA is now in use as many members plan to play. Tennis may be substituted in game cases or part of the regular gymnasium work.
A worker was severely burned at the Oteel plant during afternoon hours while near a gasoline lamp. An ignition from escaping gas caused an explosion and burns to the worker’s face and back. He was treated by company physicians and sent to hospital in Wiekeng by Ransom's ambulance. He lives on Eleventh Avenue at Lorain with his wife and child.
A branch of the Ladies Catholic Benefit association is organized in Elyria with thirty members. Mrs F W Faulhaber and Mrs Caller of Cleveland lead the effort. Meetings will be held on the first and third Thursdays each month. Officers include President Mrs B Foulhaber and several vice presidents, secretaries, a treasurer, marshal, guard, and trustees.
Dan Easin fell on brick pavement on east Third street while practicing with the hook and ladder company for the Fourth of July events. He suffered a deep cut over his right eye sewn up by Dr. Reefy. Firemen completed rapid drill with a 30 yard run and ladder ascent in a little over forty seconds.
Saturday evening car 49 on the Lorain Street Railway struck a large horse from the Tilden farm trying to cross the track in Elyria. Motorman Rowe attempted to stop but could not avoid the collision. The horse was instantly killed and the front of the car sustained minor damage but continued its trip.
The Columbia club will host a concert and ball Thursday evening at the Swearer block with invitation only admission. The program features orchestra and sextette numbers, solo and duet performances, dialogues, and a “Robin Adair” quartet, plus a patriotic tune for the Fourth. Tickets from band agents for travel within 30 miles west of the Ohio river are available for July 8 and 4, with return by July 5.

A southbound Big Four passenger train struck two horse buggies at an unprotected crossing near New London at 2 o clock Tuesday. One horse died and Mrs. Charles Ellis, her seven year old daughter, Hirnu Billig, and Mrs. John Ellis of Fitchville were injured. Mrs. John Ellis and the child are believed fatally hurt.
The Wilbur L Smith steamship was launched Tuesday at Lorain as part of a 16 vessel plan for the United States Transportation Company. At 400 feet long, 50 feet beam, and 21 feet depth, she features modern machinery and electric plant. She will haul ore and coal and enter service after fitting out.
A Lorain based firm named Commissary Company of Lorain was incorporated on Wednesday to erect a new hotel. Incorporators include OQ HL Feldman A Koegle Max Isenberg WS Pole and G A Resek with capital stock of 10000 dollars. Site for the hotel has not been decided.
The Attorney General sent an opinion to the state auditor holding that the Dow tax lien may be enforced against the real estate before chattels are exhausted. If the county treasurer fails to enforce the lien, the auditor may direct the prosecuting attorney to bring suit. This matters as saloon owners often do not own the property housing the business.
J. 3 Raucher and Chas Frank, owners of a Hogan's third addition lot in Lorain, sue Lorain city and Lorain equity to stop a sidewalk assessment of 3.92 dollars. They contend the lot’s value is only 0 and cannot bear more than a quarter of that value.
