Mrs. Cullom, state organizer of the W C T U, spoke at the Church of Christ on liquor问题. She cited saloon methods to attract boys, including free brandy samples, alcohol in soft drinks, giveaways in fancy bottles, prizes for drinking, and devices like talking machines to lure youths, urging caution about ongoing efforts to normalize drinking.
The attorney general's ruling blocks county infirmary aid to non inmates, forcing townships to fund relief. Elyria faces chronic destitution with families costing large sums, notably the Crosmyer family, and the entire Dow tax of 15,000 goes to infirmary directors. Township funds and infirmary capacity are strained, leaving no clear solution.
Cleveland jan 18 the circuit court following attorney general Wade Ellis recommendation dismissed the case against Van Dorn Iron Works Company for violating the Valentine anti trust law in a Putnam county bridge contract pooling arrangement. The court found the firm acted without the president’s knowledge and noted this was the first offense by the company.
The court agrees to dismiss the case after 150 dollars, the cost to the company of the pooling arrangement, had been paid to Putnam County, and after the costs of the suit had been paid.
Washington reports Senator Blackburn of Kentucky forced a change to Senator Foraker's Brownville shooting resolution. Blackburn sought insertion of a clause affirming the president's right to discharge enlisted men without honor. The move surprised many Republicans as the debate opened. Also a notice: WANTED A competent girl for general housework at 120 Grace Court.
Rt. Rev. Mesr. George F. Houck chancellor of the Cleveland diocese and secretary to Bishop Horstman is critically ill at his Lakewood home with typhoid fever. He fell ill two weeks ago while serving as chaplain to a Sister of Charity at St. Augustine convent, and his doctor offers little hope for recovery.
A startling claim from Monroeville west of here on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern line reports a survey for a canal from Oak Point to Monroeville. C. B. Walker says he heard an engineer announce the plan to aid large vessel interests during a Cleveland to Norwalk ride.
At Columbus yesterday the Hen ristra Telephone Company increased its capital stock from 4000 to 8000 dollars to rebuild the line and extend service to rural districts. The charter was amended to permit construction of lines into Huron and Erie counties.
Certificates were received by County Auditor Hasered from the Secretary of State for 14994.90 as the county’s share of money collected by the state for school purposes. A second certificate for 974.17 represents the county’s share of the Western Reserve school fund, to be distributed among districts by enumeration.
After a short illness Mrs Jane Haines of Washington Avenue died Friday at her son’s home in Butler Pennsylvania. Further notice of funeral arrangements will be issued later.
An accident at Oberlin noon yesterday resulted from a signal block failure. The fast freight crashed into the local on a side track because the switch showed a clear track while the signal was open.
The grand jury may not finish until Monday or Tuesday next week due to new cases. Among them is the blowing of the safes of the Barrows Milling Company at Lotain last week. It is also hinted that many John Gee cases will be presented by the Prosecutor at the last moment.
City water works collects about 6100 in rents for the quarter ending Oct 1 under the old system and about 6500 for the quarter ending Jan 1 under the new system. Despite rate adjustments and some protests, overall revenue rose, with inspectors finding pay adjustments and some customers angry at disconnections. Scott Hinman says this is the largest single quarter of water rates collected since the works were built.
A large box was found by section men near the East side tracks of the L. 8. M. railway at 9 30 Friday morning. It contained many leather hand bags packed in smaller pasteboard boxes. The box was turned over to railroad authorities and no clue to the thief was found.

Surviving residents say the quake struck without a clear direction as walls collapsed. troops guard loot and rescue operations continue amid aftershocks and rising fears of drowning in tidal surges.
East side property owners learn a Lorain man intends to start a saloon near the new factories. Deeds in the area restrict saloon use, blocking sites. Residents consider a local option election or supporting church efforts to build a chapel near the Dean plant, with donors offering land for it.
Walter Black of Zanesville travels to Washington to press Senators Dick and Foraker for support of Judge J. J. Adams amid the Grosvenor bill proposing a new federal judge in Ohio. Adams played a leading role in the state convention last fall.
