Tusk Pair Found on Brown Farm in Mastodon Dig
On Mr. B C French’s Brown helm farm another mastodon tusk was unearthed after the first. It matches the earlier find in form and preservation though its tip is broken. The tusk weighs about 300 pounds and measures roughly 5 feet 10 inches long with a 7 inch base. French noted bones scattered over 300 feet, suggesting a swamp death. He suspects an ancient ice drift and southwestward current shaped the swamp and carried shells and pine trees into the area.
