Growth of Elyria Schools Five-Year Report
The August 1 meeting of the Elyria Board of Education heard Superintendent Comings present a five year growth report. Enrollment rose from 1521 to 1998, with high school enrollment dropping to 287 from 306, and projections show substantial increases next year. A new road-sized building is planned to handle growth. Tuition from nonresident pupils rose steadily, now totaling over 8,300 annually. Programs expanded include book keeping, stenography, and typewriting in the high school, history and civics, chemistry and physics labs, and a reworked reading room. Manual training expanded to four grades and two high school years, with calls for iron work and broader vocational credit from technical schools.
