At last night’s service board meeting the city council items were received and filed. Iron balcony construction for the remodeled city hall will be bid. changes exclude a stairway and cost about 600 dollars. The board did not appoint a city engineer and continued routine business.
Columbus, August 4. Not one cent of the state's money will be paid to any county fair association which permits the selling of pools at races held in connection with the fair. Capt. W.W. Miller, secretary of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, explains that counties or district agricultural societies may draw state funds based on population, up to a $500 cap, only if the fair is conducted under state laws and board rules.
An electric railway project from Lorain to Oberlin aims to start by spring. The plan seeks use of Pearl street and Tenth avenue, with Lorain Street Railway tracks from Pearl to Grove street, connecting near Avon Beach & Southern. The company promises traffic offsets to cover track use, pending Lake Shore Railway decision.
A official suggests compensation will be provided for track use once preliminary surveys finish and the company picks a route. Construction work would begin soon after, with rail progress expected to be well under way by early next spring.

The annual gathering of the Ladies Society was held yesterday on East Avenue at Mr. J F Haserodt’s home. A carload from Cleveland plus Elyria visitors brought about seventy people. Participants enjoyed baskets, games, boat rides, and the society’s regular business activities.

Lorain grocers and butchers voted to close all markets next Wednesday for a grand basket picnic aboard the steamer Frontenac. The boat will depart in the morning for Cedar Point with members and friends, returning later, with no formal program. A baseball game and a noon basket dinner are planned as the main events.
The Lorain board of public service appointed Robert Roberta of Lorain as superintendent of the waterworks to replace G. L. Penney who resigned. The appointment is effective immediately. Roberta is currently a machinist and Reuben Sharp, a foreman, becomes assistant superintendent in a new office to aid during upcoming major improvements.
Bert Hards, a bartender, hired a rig with a beat girl for a ride Wednesday afternoon. While stopped for cigars in Tutore, the horse bolted near LaPorte, veering into Mr J P Chapman’s yard. Pat Crowe watched the buggy lurch as lines fell, causing a scare but no injuries or damage beyond minor brambles.
The United States Fidelity Company faces a suit to recover 15000 dollars posted for Spear’s bond. Spear’s cashier A B Spear’s bond was brought here by the receiver of Citizens National Bank of Oberlin. The bank allegedly lost 160000 dollars due to Spear’s dealings with Mrs Chadwick. Spear is imprisoned.
A Vermillion meeting set the Merchants and Manufacturers picnic for August 30 at Linwood Park. Events include two ball games with ten dollar prizes, a 100 yard dash, boys and girls races, a married ladies race, and a free for all. Elyria band to provide music. Methodist church ladies to hold bakery Saturday morning at Kady’s Drug Store.
S W Henson asserts in a letter to the paper that his automobile was not speeding during a collision involving Mr Laundon and a single rig with three occupants on a Wednesday afternoon. He says the other party crossed the horse drawn vehicle, and he denied driving at twenty five miles per hour, noting he was not exceeding eight.
Avon Beach and Southern Railway applied to Lorain Board of Service for grade stakes on Grove Street to lay track to expedite construction. The company pledged to avoid disputes by starting trade immediately, ending a recent police detail dispute over guard duty connected with the controversy.
Railroad crews laid tracks after the city gave permission and guards were temporarily removed that evening. Some specials hired to help will be reassigned to regular duties during the period when regular workers are on vacation.
