The poem by Mrs S Smite laments autumn days fading from the skies and the onset of cold winds. It interlaces nature imagery with reflections on memory, mortality, and the dead, including a ship with a death’s head ensign and lines about loved ones resting beneath the sod.
Eighteen years ago a New England ship on a mission of mercy carried bread for famine in the Cape de Verdes. A pirate brigantine with guns on deck intercepts, the mate and crew face a perilous boarding. A swarthy pirate leader questions the cargo, demands water, and shows a rare moment of humanity. The vessel’s crew and a dying child amid the crew’s cabin witness sorrow, fear, and fleeting mercy as the pirate departs after a brief exchange of vows. Meanwhile other brief items describe mail robberies near Philadelphia, a flag satire in Franklin county, and urban animal incidents.
From Lonr New Jersey Oct 8 a melancholy catastrophe tied to the fugitive slave law. A theft in Acquacknock led constables to seize a free black man who fled home when faced with arrest. He fought with a knife wounding a constable, who may not survive. The man claimed innocence and said officers threatened capture for resistance. Citizens fear for colored residents under the law. GEHon William Duer at Utica denounces the act.

The writer blasts figures like Cass and Buell, laments slave trade votes, and mocks editorial routines while plotting county nominations and demonstrations. A Monday visitor witnessed a pet exhibit at Mr John Gebard Jr’s establishment. A strong glass wire cage housed four large rattlesnakes and fourteen smaller ones. A large rat entered the den and was attacked. the snakes, especially the smaller ones, bit the rat as it attempted to defend itself. The scene drew attention from ladies and gentlemen as a curious display of predatory reptiles.
