A fragmentary poem depicts a dangerous charming woman and a cautious listener. The lyric voice contrasts a wooing bride reference with a warning of deception and later shifts to a nature scene of storms and a fading rose, portraying sorrow and a fragile heart.
The long Nashville convention opens with resolutions from Southern leaders opposing Northern anti slavery moves and insisting on constitutional rights. Speakers from Alabama and Virginia push for a compromise, union preservation, and a plan to govern territories while resisting federal action that would protect slave property.
The convention opened with prayer and discussed the formation of a new Southern Republican Party. Dawson of Georgia proposed a union proposal, while other members contested readings and amendments. The address was adopted after tense exchanges, and several resolutions and thanks followed before adjournment. A separate item notes a Gustavus robbery with $70 in bank bills and $200 in notes.
