A long reminiscence on Stephen A. Douglas in Illinois, noted as a rising political figure who grew from illness into prominence. The Madison public meeting discussed constitution reforms, credit shifts, and the broad fight against state corruption and oligarchic influence, urging unity to reject a new constitution.
A fragmented reminiscence follows a young Canandaigua man whose illness, then fever and typhus, bound him to loyal friends like Phillip Buttell. After long convalescence he reappears in public, witnesses a presidential reception in Buffalo, and hears Senator Douglas eloquently address railroads, commerce, and sectional issues with humor and fervor.
To the voters of Ohio the question arises of a no license clause in the new constitution. The proposal would prohibit granting licenses to sell intoxicating drinks and submit a separate section for adoption. The measure asks citizens to decide on the prohibition by a ballot with yes or no on the license question.
