An imperfect, sprawling recollection blends Edgar Allan Poe style lines with a farmer’s memoir. A boy raised near a mill recalls reading Pilgrim’s Progress and family hardship, a failed move to America, a ruined savings, a violent robbery, and years of labor under a harsh master as poverty widens.
Jim Scyorging, a hard drinker with a comfortable home, sinks into habit. His wife Mrs. Scroggins, industrious and sharp, schemes with a local daguerreotypist to capture Jim’s drunken state on a plate. The plan leads to a dry run, mutual sympathy, and new romance with their daughter, as the tale begins.
A first person memoir follows Sohund Spencer born in Bankdale Lincoln shire, son of a shepherd serving Mr Wyham. He grows close to Mary foreman's daughter, learning to read and write from the foreman, sharing quiet rural days of field walks, water mills, and romantic childhood dreams.
