In a quiet New England village a farmer and family live a simple, pious life. A weary traveler arrives and recalls wars, repentance, and the pull of home, while a girl and a grandmother face a cold New Year Eve as matches bring visions of warmth and a final Christmas night.
A starving girl with bare feet carries matches on a bitter New Year Eve. She wanders cold through a snow filled street, eyes on warm windows and roast smells, while her father beats her and she has no money or home. She warms nowhere and is lost to the night.
The speaker condemns the present free competitive system for causing widespread distress in Britain Ireland famine and poverty. He argues the old balanced system protected the weak prints wealth and health, while current policy sacrifices the many for the few. He warns that government inaction during crises worsens suffering and calls for universal welfare over unchecked self interest.
