The steel industry rejected the union offer to extend contracts from July 1 to July 15 with retroactive gain protection. Negotiations to resume were set for 10 a.m. today while a July 1 strike threat remained possible. The union maintains the extension with retroactivity, but the industry insists no wage or cost increases are contemplated.
President Eisenhower vetoed a wheat price support and a tobacco promotion bill. Leaders in Congress lament the vetoes, saying no override chances exist and the move will harm farmers facing difficult times.
State Public Service Commissioner Francis T Mylott 61 of Jackson Heights Queens was arrested after a car crash injuring an elderly pedestrian. Police say he refused a breath test and was jailed for Vehicle Accident Court as investigators review the incident.
The fourth Discoverer satellite rocket failed to reach orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base. In Brooklyn a four month old boy, Richard Fox Jr., was killed by rat bites in a three room shack on Coney Island area. The infant's mother awoke to screams around 5 40 am as rats fled the carriage where he slept. The child was found covered with bite wounds and died about an hour later at a hospital.

In Laufen Germany the death toll from a bus train collision near the town climbed to 40 as two more injured died. Thirty people remain in hospitals with non fatal injuries from the crash that occurred Saturday.
