Chicago is told that in 1959 about 100 people died daily in automobile crashes, with total deaths between 37,500 and 38,000 and 1,400,000 disabling injuries, per the National Safety Council.
Chicago AP reports Dr. Hans Selye of the University of Montreal suggests aging may stem from cumulative stress on the body. A hollow tube implanted in a rat forms a cord of age that grows and withers as the body’s adaptation energy is spent.
President Eisenhower will address Congress in person on January 7 to present the State of the Union. Congress reconvenes the day before and the 1961 budget is set for submission January 18 with an expected balanced outcome. Eisenhower’s economic report will follow the budget on January 20.

Premier Khrushchev in letters to Britain France and the United States said he was satisfied that the date and place were definitely agreed. The invitation hints at a series of meetings to follow, linked to West Berlin tensions.
