A wing fuel tank dropped from a B47 bomber during takeoff at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson Arizona and exploded. A bicyclist identified as Joan A David 30 of Tucson was burned to death. Eyewitness Carl W Moyer recounted the flash and his attempt to extinguish the flames.
Sen. E. L. Bartlett of Alaska announced on Monday his plan to seek another term. His current term ends Jan. 1, 1961, and Bartlett, age 55, was elected in 1958 as one of Alaska's first U.S. senators after statehood. The other Alaska seat held by Sen. Ernest Gruening runs to January 1963.
Lake County Ohio sheriff says Christmas Eve sniper case remains a mystery. Floyd Hargrove denied the confessed shooting after polygraph tests cleared him and officials plan further questioning while tracing motives tied to an eight month affair involving Charles R. Clark’s wife. Funeral drew about 200 spectators as investigators monitored the scene for clues.
In a 20 minute tense standoff a Fairfax tow truck driver and a Corte Madera supervisor talked down Ernest Gross, a 60 year old Southern Pacific locomotive engineer from a bridge ledge. They urged him to value his life and he climbed down to be treated at San Francisco Hospital's psychiatric ward.

Chicago AP Wallace R. Brode retiring AAAS president warned top priority science programs strain funds and manpower. He urged creation of a federal science department or coordinated body to oversee a national program and called for annual federal support from 10 million to 10 billion dollars. He described space ships, advanced computing, and vast radio telescopes as future goals.
Far ranging snowstorms blocked roads and stranded scores as blizzards hit the Midwest and New England. Eight deaths occurred in traffic accidents across Kansas Maine Wisconsin and Iowa. Ice and sleet disrupted lines and telephones while flights faced delays or cancellations amid fog and mist in the eastern half of the nation.

The air force court-martial of Allan Law rence Pope, a 31 year old Korean War veteran from Miami, recessed to study defense claims he is a war prisoner who cannot be tried. Pope, who says he lives in Indonesia, was shot down May 18, 1958 over the Banda Sea during an uprising in Sumatra and the Celebes.
Dr Barbara Moore a 56 year old Russian born dietician and wife of sculptor Harry Moore limped from a hospital after a seven day Edinburgh to London trek. She says she may travel to America to demonstrate walking and to prove women are as tough as men.
Western Allies expect to propose to Moscow within 48 hours that a East West summit be held in mid May 16 21. London sources favor May 16 for scheduling though Macmillan reportedly prefers May 4. Khrushchev and de Gaulle dates create conflicts with other plans.
The Soviet Union accepted Western proposals to resume East West disarmament talks in Geneva on March 15. The Tass note to French Ambassador DeJean said Bulgaria Poland Czechoslovakia and Romania would attend the 10 nation disarmament commission meeting, the first in 2 1/2 years, granting equal representation at the conference table.

Paris France's foreign minister Maurice Couve de Murville outlined in a one day National Assembly debate the core rift with the United States and NATO partners over air defense integration and storing nuclear bombs on French soil He warned that placing French air forces under a single commander with power to open fire would cede sovereignty and posed grave problems for France.
Washington AP reports a heated debate over the steel industry's last offer with a proposed raise of 30 or 24 cents an hour over three years depending on calculations. Pay ranges from 1.96 to 3.97 per hour across 32 job classifications, and union leadership predicts a strong no vote. Working rules split management and union on efficiency, with a proposed joint committee to study possible changes in local provisions to improve efficiency while protecting workers.
Jeannette Kaser, 16, was buried in Silverton Oregon after her car ran off a foggy road last Saturday. Her mother Floyd Kaser had left on a trip east and had not been informed of her daughter's death, despite the family delaying services while searching for her.
Intertex International Inc of New York said the 30 million dollar textile plant will be the largest of its kind built in recent years. The facility will rise at Kalinin, near Moscow, marking the biggest U S private enterprise deal in the Soviet Union since before World War II.
Havana AP report says Jorge Pacallao, who defended American Frank Austin Young in a counterrevolutionary case, will stand trial before a military tribunal. He is charged with plotting a jailbreak to free political prisoners from a Pinar del Rio prison, including Young and co defendant Peter John Lambton. Young was sentenced to 30 years. Lambton 25, and Young briefly escaped before being recaptured.
Vice Admiral Charles L. C. Evans of Britain will assume the NATO post in April, becoming deputy supreme allied commander for the Atlantic. The appointment places Evans in a key leadership role within the alliance based in Norfolk, Virginia.
