Corning unemployment shows a seasonal uptick with 611 job seekers registered at the local employment office, about half of the 1,132 figure from December 1958. Office data cover 417 compensation claims last week producing 331 UI checks and 10 federal program checks, plus 72 initial claims for US and 4 for federal programs.
Steuben County Atty Ernest C. Peltz urged Corning Council Knights of Columbus to instill authority and church-based values in children. He cited crime offenders under 25, church attendance gaps, and the need for home discipline as schools cannot alone ensure proper conduct.
Hornell Evening Star Lodge 44 F and AM will hold its 145th annual banquet and meeting at the Hornell Masonic Temple Tuesday night. Maple Court of the Order of Amaranth serves dinner at 6 30. Sayre Lloyd Hammond 18 of 107 Harris Street escaped injury when his car struck a steer on Elmira Street Sayre road about 9 15 p m Saturday. The steer owned by Nicholas Rush wandered onto the highway and was killed in the accident.
A public hearing at 8 tonight in Corning City Hall will address Local Law No. 3 to add a sixth supervisor from the Sixth and Seventh Wards and a supervisor from the Eighth to Ninth and Tenth Wards.
