Paris reports crowning Allied gains on the western front as a turning tide that relieves pressure on Russia and unsettles Bulgaria. Paris crowds cheer while autumn suggests the war may last another year despite major Allied artillery and trench fighting.
Salt Lake City news reports endorsed threats against Governor Spry's family after his refusal to spare Joseph Hillstrom from execution. Detectives shadow the governor’s son to school as Industrial Workers of the World sympathizers are blamed for the danger.
Dr H G Huffman Youngstown oculist endures a 47 day water fast on Grand River banks after a bet with death. He then resumes eating and plans to repeat the fast in a yearly routine to feel uplifted, stating food was replaced by water from a spring and that sleep was limited during the fast.
George Russell Jr reports eight thousand dollars in fire losses at their river ranch with no insurance. The blaze began Sunday the 19th and reignited Monday as high winds swept the pasture. Fifty men from Battle Mountain helped fight the fire using backfires. buildings narrowly escaped. Some campers are suspected of causing the fire. Russell plans to return this week to prepare cattle shipments.
Fifteen persons injured when dynamite destroyed Tony Tossone's house at Republic. Traces of dynamite found. Dorothy Stewart, relative to George Brady, is noted among local residents. A fine sample of gold ore from the Hardacrabble mine is described as heavily gold covered.
The American legation announced all reservists born 1892 to 1911 are recalled. The Bulgarian legation reports calling reservists in America aged 21 to 43.
In Seattle on September 27, reports say Canada donated five submarines to aid the Allies. Built at North Vancouver, the vessels left in February and have arrived safely and are now in service in European waters.
Unconfirmed reports indicate Bulgaria has sent Serbia an ultimatum while allied diplomats prepare to depart Sofia.
Berlin dispatch reports an Austrian submarine sank a French transport in the Libyan sea. The vessel was en route to Cyprus when attacked.
Chicago on September 27 reports five thousand clothing workers on strike with forty thousand more set to strike tonight. Police reserves were ordered to the garment making district as the labor action spreads.
President Wilson weighs keeping the current sugar tariff to raise revenue and also considers higher duties on liquor and lowering income tax exemptions. The report notes the administration evaluating tax policy options in Washington on September 27.

Several members excused. Rutherford barred from one case. Cases listed include theft of hogs cattle and perjury. Large attendance at the Charles Doherty estate sale on the North Fork. 192 head of stock cattle sold for 52 per head to George Calligan. 60 head of range horses went to George Welland at 8.50. 240 tons of hay bid in by Chester Lang at 7 a ton. Heirs of Charles Doherty reside in Ireland. Mrs. Johann Bisenberg is executrix with Henderson and Caine as attorneys. Morley Griswold was auctioneer. Additional land and stock to be sold later amid last Friday’s storm and travel disruptions. Local report mentions a fatal accident rumor and a death in Salt Lake City.
Denver sept. 27 John D Rockefeller Jr arrived to confer with miners union officials and perhaps to see a committee. It is expected he will declare that he, not his father, is now the active head of the Rockefeller interests. A new paternalistic series has begun.
Attendees of the Doherty sale on the North Fork report the roads were very muddy. William Doyle's large Packard was the only car able to navigate the mud, aiding others up hills and even towing a car for miles after removing a length of barbed wire from a fence.
Under a congressional act Nevada will receive 16244.53 from timber sales and forest reserve revenues. The funds are to be applied to county school and road purposes as reported by the Daily Independent.
