An unofficial German embassy note to United Press says Germany’s main aim in presenting the submarine note was to join with America for freedom of the seas and early peace. It adds Germany seeks peace with honor and urges freedom of Poland and equal treatment of Jews, warning the Allies must answer civilization for ongoing war.
Champ Clark prevents a lynching in Bowling Green Missouri by addressing a mob from Claraville. He urges the six-car group to disperse after they rouse him from bed to hang Harrison Rose, alleged slayer of Bud Davidson.
Mrs Louisa Jane Hardesty Boettcher dies after a brief illness at her son and daughter’s home on B street California born in Louisville Kentucky 72 years ago. She moved west with her family in 1865 and spent most of her life in the region. She was praised as a kind hearted devoted friend and her death brings wide regret to many.
Mrs. Elizabeth Mohr was arrested on a murder charge after the fatal shooting of her husband Dr. C Franklin Mohr and wounding his office assistant Emily Burger and chauffeur George Healis. Two confessed to accepting five thousand dollars to assist the doctor. The wife, who had filed for separation, pleads not guilty and is held without bail to September 16. The two black men, Victor Brown and Henry Spellman, also plead not guilty.
French aviators bombarded the batteries at Etterbeck near Brussels this morning. Reports say many German soldiers were killed.
Grodno outer forts have been captured and the fortress is believed near. Also reports of a man’s wrist injury from a car accident in Petaluma and funeral notices for Mrs. Boettcher in Santa Rosa with details on survivors and service arrangements.
Cardinal Gibbons visited the White House and said he discussed peace prospects with President Wilson. He acknowledged receiving a message from the pope and planned talks with Secretary Lansing likely on the Mexican situation. The pope's peace note was presented and deemed satisfactory.
An Adriatic officer reports in Liverpool that the submarine which sank the Arabic has been captured without being sunk. England withholds formal announcement.
London reports the British steamer Savona has been sunk by submarine. Seventeen crewmen were wounded and three are missing and believed dead. The incident occurred as British forces engage in ongoing naval operations.

A cyclone heavily damaged central and northern Manitoba reaching Mineola Hamiota Plumes and Mellville. Fields lay bare houses demolished livestock killed and a Grand Trunk Pacific bridge destroyed. A train plunged into a river with the engineer killed and telegraph wires down.
County Commissioner Jones reports his son Leslie Jones of Stanford University is under guard with diphtheria. The illness is serious but not alarming, and friends in Elko County regret the young man’s illness as he previously spent his summer here before returning to Palo Alto.
Pittsburgh September 2 Deputy tried to serve papers on Mrs. Evelyn Thaw in the divorce case but the subpoena was returned marked not found.
Report says the Rotterdam catching fire in Amsterdam harbor due to overheated cotton in her hold. The 24,000 ton vessel with 273 passengers sailed from New York August 21 and discharged passengers at Amsterdam as crews work to control the blaze.
A deal completed yesterday transfers the Elko draying business from A. P. Cannon to Alex Hay and W. L. Paul. The firm becomes Elko Transfer Company with office at the Owl saloon and night calls to phone 28. Cannon thanks customers and wishes success to the new owners. Also in district court this morning Mrs. Helen Conness of Carlin was granted a divorce from George S. Conness on charges of desertion.
