Vienna reports that quantities of Japanese munitions were captured from Russians in Galicia. Austrians destroyed a Russian armored train on the Putlovka river region. Fighting in the Kilki district remains unchanged.
In New York Harbor a Lackawanna ferry collided with a pier head in fog, injuring about fifty passengers. Autos and wagons on the lower deck were piled together as horses trampled passengers amid the crash reported by United Press.
Police probe unsolved aspects of the Weinstein murder. A new trunk in the Pamias flat suggests concealment. Alienists dispute the woman's mentality with views of subnormality and cold blood murder. She faces arraignment in a week as tests may determine her sanity.
United Press reports the Charlton trial in Rome will resume Friday after a pause due to attorney Picardi illness. The verdict is expected next week. Knemeyer, sister of a Reno education official, visits Elko as Judge Harwood attends Metropolitan Improvement Co. property sale proceedings.
United Press reports Gov. Goethals insisted on moving two hills in Gaillard Cut to curb slides that delay canal reopening. Dredges, shovels, and workers remove earth as slides shift from base of cliffs, with terraces cut to prevent future collapse. Nearly 200 vessels wait at Balboa and Colon.
Borum reports a German division retreated at Styr Testonka on October 21 while counterattacks by the German reserves push forward, indicating ongoing combat activity in the area.
J J Raine, receiver for Pacific Reclamation and Metropolis Improvement, sold their parcels at ten oclock. W Prescott Scott bid 150000 for Pacific Reclamation land including irrigation works and a dam site. Metropolis Improvement property, including hotel and site, sold for 50000. Sale involved 20000 acres irrigable land and 9000 acres railroad land with contracts. Some water rights and litigation over Humboldt river water rights affected earlier colonization plans.
Washington date Oct 21 The army defense program is officially announced. Pacific coast forts will glisten with heavy artillery as plans call for fourteen and sixteen inch guns. The army board recommends enlarging Port Arthur at San Pedro and installing sixteen inch guns for San Francisco.
London reports a conference between the French Minister of War and the British cabinet committee decided to send four hundred thousand British and French soldiers to assist Serbia. The force would invade Bulgaria and Turkey to relieve Serbia and enforce allied aims in the Balkan theater.
Rumors in San Francisco claim Eugene Schmitz, defeated mayoral candidate, intends to challenge John Nolan in next year's congressional race. Schmitz allegedly seeks a recount for the mayoral vote, and analysts note his strongest support lay in Nolan's district despite Schmitz not residing there.
United Press reports Bethlehem Steel common shares jumped on two sales, advancing 70 and seven eighths points to close at 599 percent in New York.

Robert Shepard filed a district court suit against the firm Hunter and Banks seeking $10,000 for injuries to his leg suffered July 15 in a hay field while operating a mowing machine. A Nish dispatch reports Salonika Nish railway damaged by Bulgars. Turkey unable to meet American relief request for Armenian releases. relatives cannot be located. Telefora trial extended with defense witnesses and adjournment to await California witness. Mrs Nadeau departed for San Francisco.
Mexicans attacked Ojo De Agua about sixty miles north of Brownsville killing Sergeant Schaffer and privates McConnell and Joyce. Reinforcements rushed to the scene as the bandits fled leaving five dead and one wounded. The villagers were surrounded and the fighting involved eight U S soldiers with rifles and seven with revolvers. The Yanaga ranch at Sebastian was burned.
John Caspar a Kansas City distiller was sentenced to nine years and three days in the penitentiary and to pay a fine of thirty three hundred dollars for moonshining. Henry Brown an ex government ganger drew two years and a thousand dollar fine. Others received lighter sentences.
The Bulgarian forces have advanced to the Sannecar Konajarevac railway line, reported by United Press. German troops seized Russian positions along the Dvina river from Bockwitz to Bersmuende southeast of Riga.
In Lovelock a daring Ed Staunt, famed for gallantry and dance, fled a ceiling shake rather than finish the song. He left his partner at the back door, insisting he could die dancing with her, an escape that left local belles puzzled and an explanation awaited.
An Athens dispatch reports the diplomatic corps at Nish left for Cacak with a later stop at Crajevo as part of their travel.

Berlin Oct 21 It is announced that the best answer to Britain's claim that German submarines have ceased is in September's record of British vessels torpedoed. The list shows twenty nine merchantmen, two transports and seven trawlers. Six merchantmen were mined.
Paris Oct 21 German efforts to pierce the French lines east of Rheims failed after a violent dense attack. Three attempts were made along a five mile front. Artillery and machine guns decimated the Germans. The German night attack at Ross Givenchy and the attack at East Moncel were repulsed.
The president officially proclaims November 25 as Thanksgiving Day noting a year of peace for the United States and the retention of friendly relations amid European strife. Dr A J Hood returns from a professional San Francisco trip and visits the exposition.
