Mrs Connell Charged With Attempting to Poison Husband

Mrs M B Connell a bride of a few months was arrested on charges of trying to poison her 70 year old husband a wealthy man. An ipecac attempt left him seriously ill but expected to recover. Evidence gathered by Mrs Massey will be presented at trial with disclosures expected to be stranger than fiction.

German Break Probably Averted

Washington reports the president will accept Germanys new orders to submarine commanders as meeting American demands and reserves rights to respond to future developments. The note, prepared after talks with Secretary Lansing, will be sent to Berlin this afternoon. The administration plans to press the British trade issue next.

Auto Crash Near Coney Island Paralyzes Seven

O F Jenks proprietor of the Carroll Bar is at St Mary's hospital near death after a high speed auto accident on the road to Sparks. Six Aero men including C F Jenks Ricard Kerwin A Baer Ralph Deni Allen Ellridge and Barney Barnhall are injured with bruises and broken bones when the car rolled after a rear tire burst and struck a rut during a pass at about 40 miles per hour.

Senate OKs $60 Million Road Program in Good Roads Vote

The senate approved a road appropriation totaling 85 million dollars for road improvements. Seventy five million goes to federal aid for state highway construction over five years. Ten million funds national highways within national parks and forests.

California Frost Causes Big Crop Damage

A heavy Sunday morning frost in California damaged crops statewide by about 1 million dollars. Napa county saw 50 to 60 percent losses while Sonoma reported 70 to 80 percent crop destruction. Hop and potato yields were also severely affected.

Prince Von Buelow, former German chancellor, is reported to have been summoned to the front by the Kaiser. The move is described as politically significant. The Kaiser reportedly sent an autographed letter to the pope seeking a conference with the belligerents for an immediate armistice.

California posse battles with convicts near Dyserville

Eureka Calif May 8 After an all night pursuit four convicts who escaped from Mendicino road camp were surrounded by a posse near Dyserville about fifty miles south of Eureka. Shots were exchanged but no injuries reported and another capture attempt was expected today.

Germans Press Meuse Sector Gains Near Verdun

German forces push into French trenches on hill No 304 north of Verdun capturing 40 officers and 1380 men. French attacks at Thiamont repulsed with 300 prisoners taken. French fielded 61 divisions in the Meuse sector, twice the German strength.

The 1736 ton Herald was sunk by a submarine this morning near Amsterdam. The crew were saved. A German submarine was sunk by a mine. most of its crew were rescued by a destroyer.
