Germany asserts the United States must demand equal observance of international law from all belligerents. The note underscores a potential break in diplomacy unless President Wilson backs down retribution or policy.
Four Irish rebel leaders Joseph Plunkett Edwin Daly Michael O Hanrahan and William Peters were executed by an English firing squad. Fifteen others received death sentences later commuted to ten years in prison. One leader was given eight years and two others ten years.
Washington May 5 The German reply to the US note warns that unless President Wilson retreats from his position, diplomatic relations with Germany may end. Germany accuses the United States of bad faith, demands that neutral nations accept Germanys terms, and signals potential unrestricted action if U S objectives fail. The president and cabinet met to review the situation but delayed action awaiting the Berlin text.

Joseph Sterne Henderson, 67, a prominent druggist, died in Missouri from pulmonary apoplexy after a brief illness. He leaves a wife, one daughter, and seven sons including Hayden and Lambert in town. The Henderson family received telegram news from Glasgow, and friends here recall his strong personality and kindness. The paper notes a local trial verdict of not guilty for W. T. O'Neil in Wells.

The department of labor reports higher overall prices for February compared to a year earlier. Food articles up 9 percent from last February versus five years ago. Eggs declined from January to February, while rent edged up about 2 percent. Potatoes remain 8 percent below February four years ago. Five foods dropped in price over the year: plate boiling beef, lard, flour, cornmeal, and prunes.
