General Maxwell reports that all Dublin rebel leaders have surrendered. Fighting continues in western counties with sniping in Dublin. A large artillery detachment moves toward Enniscorthy where rebels are entrenched. Two German officers were found among the dead in Dublin streets, suggesting German submarine aid to the rebellion.
Charles O. Swanberg a 70 year old Portola Louvré restaurant proprietor was shot today in the cafe by William Haase formerly head waiter at the Hofbrau whom Swanberg had hired. The shooting followed a quarrel over Haase reporting for duty. Haase fled through the cafe and escaped.
Mrs. M F Jukes reports her brother Walter A Evans a leading Kansas newspaper man shows improvement after paralysis struck last week following a strenuous campaign for a reform ticket. Evans, long political editor of the Star, is praised for honesty and public service. Thousands hope for his full recovery.
Secretary Baker conferred with the president after receipt of a long dispatch from General Scott and announced another conference with Generals Scott Funston and Obregon and Carranza's agent. Secretary Lansing said the administration's Mexico policy remains unchanged and American troops will not be withdrawn. Ambassador Arrendondo has a conference with Secretary Lansing this afternoon.
Merton Wearns Harry Thorp Dr Guy Trun tower and Jen Rapp drowned at Lite Bear Lake during trout fishing opening hours. Their boat capsized and heavy clothing and cold water prevented reaching shore. All were well known locals according to reports.
Sheriff Frank Roch and posse member Nels Nelson were shot and killed by horse thieves near the Wyoming Colorado line near Box elder. The outlaws fled as the posse pursued them amid a reported submarine attack claims.
Vienna reports the Austrian forces withdrew before the Russian advance on the Kva river. Meanwhile Seattle longshoremen propose wage demands to shipowners, seeking 55 cents per hour for straight time and 60 cents for overtime.
President and Baker reiterate that American forces must not leave until Villa is captured or killed and that cooperation with Obregon’s de facto government is desired. A final Obregon conference is planned before resuming the chase. Carranza envoy Arrendondo pressed for withdrawal. Obregon sent a cipher message to Carranza after a strategic meeting with Trevino and others.
Washington May 1 The bill providing for a regular army of 180000 with war strength of 250000 has been virtually agreed upon by Senate and House conferees as a compromise on the Chamberlain bill.
De Witt Clinton commandery No 1 Reno Knights Templar will send 40 horsemen to the 33rd triennial conclave of the Grand Encampment in Los Angeles from June 17 to 24. The move was approved at last night’s temple meeting and reflects the order’s long-standing status in the state.
Washington May 1 The Senate unanimously passed a resolution authorizing Secretary Lane to accept on behalf of the government the patents of the Rittman Process for gasoline manufacture. The move is expected to lower prices significantly.
