Paris reports the French war office says the Germans are mounting a general infantry attack along a fifteen mile Meuse front near Verdun. They claim repulsing assaults at Hill No 304 and that French forces hold at Thiamont Farm and Douaumont Vaux. Violent artillery bombardment continues.
Reports from Jarbidge state the Bluster Consolidated will start up its mill May 1. The winter added cyanide equipment will raise extraction. The company will also treat tailings from the amalgamating mill. Five mills operated in Jarbidge but were closed during stormy weather for lack of fuel.
News reports describe fighting across seven counties linked to the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage. About 300 to 500 people arrested or wounded as Major General Maxwell notes Dublin's order returning slowly. The movement plans a Woman's Party in Chicago and may influence party alignment.
After Judge Horsey withdraws, E. J. Caine of Elko seems clear for the congressional race. chatter also mentions Joe Farnsworth state printer as a potential Democratic candidate who could challenge Caine if nominated, with strong labor support and prior Roberts strength in Eastern and Central Nevada.
London dispatch reports Ireland proclaimed a republic with Peter Pierce named president and James B. Connelly as commander in chief of the Irish Volunteer corps. English troops arrive as Dublin suffers fires and destruction in the business district and some residents fear for safety.
The Elko Independent advertises a May 6 Barnes circus with free tickets via subscriptions. Three months nets general admission, six months reserved seating, yearly grants two reserved seats and 20 percent of collections. Top seller wins $100 in gold. prizes displayed at Dupont Pharmacy. The show features hundreds of wild animals trained by actors, including lions tigers leopards pumas jaguars bears and more. The Barnes circus promises 65 numbers and a famous horses act with 650 animals overall.
In Elko last night the high school declamation prize went to Cliff Jensen of Metropolis for In June. Nine year old Jack Hillsberg won grammar school first prize with Dog Under the Wagon and Our Starry Banner. Public school displays drew praise with winners listed across 5th to 8th grades. Elko girls defeated Metropolis 16 to 14 in a basket shoot after folk dances at the Opera House.
Forest Service in Ogden Utah announces the resignation of Assistant District Forester Timothy C Hoyt effective April 30 1916 and names C N Woods as his successor Woods a Forest Service veteran since 1902 has served as forest ranger deputy supervisor and Sawtooth forest supervisor and will lead the lands program in the Inter mountain district from its Ogden headquarters.
The State Department says reports of Carranza fleeing Mexico City are false. Carranza remains headquartered there. Forty Americans including women wait to escape from Manzanillo with a warship expected to escort them to a California port.
General Obregon, chief lieutenant to General Carranza, met Generals Scott and Funston in El Paso for a formal visit. A conference at Juarez will set the real agenda with a second meeting planned in El Paso tomorrow. The Mexican decree doubles taxes after May 1 and shifts to gold payments while preserving paper at ten to one. Proceeds from tonight’s Opera House show support the local high school.
General Townshend and a garrison estimated between 10 000 and 20 000 troops surrender to Turkish forces at Kut el Amara ending the December siege. Townshend’s force reportedly includes 2920 officers and 6000 Indian troops with 8920 British troops counted. The loss shortens English prospects to advance on Baghdad.
The Federal Reserve Board announced a plan to use district Fed banks as a clearing house for national banks. The plan will take effect May 16.
