In a divisive convention progressives nominate Hughes by acclamation after Roosevelt withdraws. Teddy Roosevelt also wins an acclamation nomination from progressives, while Wilson is not the party choice. The Republican gathering names Hughes by acclamation as the candidate.
Charles Evan Hughes receives the Republican nomination for president by acclamation after Roosevelt’s bid is withdrawn by A. M. Stevenson. Roosevelt is later nominated by the Progressive party for the same office. The convention adjourns at 2 03 pm as leaders weigh Roosevelt’s stance on preparedness and international affairs. Hughes, born 1862 in Glens Falls, is a former New York governor and later a Supreme Court justice with a notable public service record.
A. H. Christensen from Utah Construction arrives from Salt Lake on business. Jacob and Kim Reed visit from White Rock ranch and attend the Mayor’s event. J. B. Burge of San Francisco attends the State Utilities Commission hearing. Mrs. T. E. Eager and daughter visit from Lamoille valley. Charles Harris and wife from New Haven stop in Elko en route south.
In a tense prelim, Justice Clark ordered H A McMurtrey held for the grand jury and dismissed H A Castle after attorneys argued over sentence limits. McMurtrey testified he warned Connell and Sewark about their marriage and denied accusing Castle of poisoning. Multiple witnesses supported portions of McMurtrey’s account. Castle’s acquittal drew relief from his supporters.
Mia Edward Lytton and two daughters return from the coast as Elko plans a ball game with Golconda at 1 30 pm tomorrow. District court jurors report Monday June 12 along with a county tax collection from delinquents. Three district judges will hear Clover valley water case and other civil and criminal matters next week.
Mr. and Mrs. Peace returned from a two week Pacific coast visit. Mr. Peace, chief dispatcher of the Western Pacific at Elko and Is Esa, is the champion trap shooter of the west. He competed in the International Trap Shoot in San Francisco among 90 rivals and posted the day’s best score, 586 of 600, the highest overall. The couple were joined by Mrs. E. H. Cardell on the trip back.
A quiet noon ceremony joined Mr. Carl Q. Prunty of Charleston and Miss May Burner of South Fork in marriage at the Mayer Hotel parlor in Elko. Rev. J. M. Swander officiated as a small gathering witnessed the ceremony. Best wishes go with the couple to their Charleston home.
Robert B. Mantell, renowned dramatic star, has signed an exclusive contract with William Fox to appear in a series of modern screen dramas. He notes Fox’s willingness to spend and cites The Blindness of Devotion as a strong example of his work. Tonight at Bradley Opera House.

Elko County commissioners awarded the county printing contract to Keith and Russell, editors and proprietors of the Elko Daily Independent, after reviewing several bids. The decision cited the Keith & Russell bid as lowest and the quality and efficiency of the work.
At Chicago June 10 the Progressive convention debated nominating a vice president. John M. Parker of Louisiana was chosen by acclamation after Hiram Johnson withdrew. Roosevelt sent word he would consider but not yet accept the nomination, with a final statement to follow.
The Elko High School commencement drew a record crowd as graduates wore self-made gowns under Mrs. M. L. Lothrop’s direction. Attorney B. H. B. Caine delivered the principal address on educational opportunities for Nevada youth and the state’s support of public schools.
Justice Charles E. Hughes sent a resignation note to President Wilson saying I hereby resign the office of justice of the supreme court. A subsequent statement to Donald Harding of the Republican convention urged maintaining rights at home and abroad and endorsed preparedness tariff reform and foreign trade. Head bandit attack reported from El Paso with unconfirmed details.
Professor Adolph Knopf of the United States Geological Survey arrived from Washington and traveled to the Ruseell ranch to thoroughly examine the tin mine. Senator Key Pittman urged action, hoping the study will develop another Nevada metal industry and benefit the region.
William Mackay, described as a negro, assaulted Mrs Fran cis Bednarsh, a white woman, then fled after mutilating her. Neighbors chased him for a half mile and police intervened to prevent lynching. The woman remained in critical condition.
