Special to The Independent report from Washington states President Wilson warns Mexican faction leaders to unite for peace or risk U S intervention to end the revolution. Ongoing warfare has caused widespread famine with thousands starving and appeals for aid reaching the administration.
Four months after R M Catlin announced shale testing south of town, analyses by R H Findlater show a forty mile long shale body with potential for a large, long running plant. The first installment of the new county library has arrived and is being installed under Judge Curler. About three thousand volumes ordered, one third arrived. Book cases divided in the east end. access restricted to within the building. The library will serve the public and the legal community, with plans to make Elko County law library among the state's best.

Paris June 2 Bulgaria and Roumania decide to simultaneously enter the war against Germany and allies. Romania will immediately send a million men against Austria and Bulgaria will direct arms against Turkey.
George Ames of Lamoille reports Elko preparations for the largest Fourth of July in the valley. Planned events include horse racing ball games a barbecu e bike race and a ball. The grove will be opened to the public and organizers aim for a big success with weekend festivities.
