London July 11 The war office announced an air raid on the enemy fleet off Constantinople. Bombs struck the Turkish Cruiser Ywuz Sultan Selim formerly the Goeden and hit the Constantinople war office. The British air fleet returned without casualties.
Millard Sage and Domingo Laca, both teens, suffered serious injuries in a high speed auto accident near McDermitt last Friday. Jack Troutwine escaped being crushed. Sage was trapped under the car and extricated with help from KF.R. Sprague party. Sage had severe injuries but was expected to recover.
Early Tuesday W H Goodin and A L Boohrodt completed Overland Trail road signs from Lovelock to Imlay. The markers guide proper turns and distances, helping tourists follow the route on the coast to coast travel map issued by the A A A.
Six local men have submitted applications for the Reserve Officers camp at the Presidio, with several more likely to apply. The six named are Carey Van Fleet, Thomas Agee, Stanley Davis, Earl Ross, Claude Armstrong, and Rhett D. Ford, all from Elko except Ford of Jurbidge. Applicants must appear in person, but many have mailed applications to the local committee.
Lincoln July 11 The Nebraska state council of defense accuses certain professors at the University of Nebraska and prominent Lutheran church leaders in the state of disloyal activity and aiding Germany. The notice warns travelers to avoid desert routes and instead use established Overland Trail segments to reach Reno via Ogden Elko Winnemucca Lovelock and road hubs to prevent danger from being stranded far from water or rail stations.
The retirement of Ministers Helfrich and Zimmermann will be gazetted tomorrow. A Berlin dispatch to the Cologne Gazette says Count Von Bernstorff, former ambassador to the United States, may succeed Zimmermann if he retires. Officials in Washington view Germany’s current political troubles as transitory and largely due to longstanding problems.

Vrivaty Jaies Orsnassen, stationed at a camp west of there, was brought in for treatment after an accidental discharge damaged a finger. Doctors Terrick and Lagi removed the injured finger at the last joint. the finger was badly shattered.
National Emergency Food Commission and The Independent urge conserve food with a nationwide canning campaign. A free canning manual will be mailed for a two cent stamp. guidance shows exact sugar usage per jelly and fruit, with careful preparation emphasized for households.
A Ruby Valley letter claims unknown culprits damaged a remote lake in the Ruby Mountains above the Griswold ranch killing thousands of fish. The Independent offers fifty dollars for information leading to arrest and conviction, urging full justice. The lake, largest in the range, was stocked with Dollyvarden trout years ago and is a noted fishing and camping spot.

Nathan Scheeline, father of Moritz Scheeline of Reno, dies at his San Francisco home at about 90. His funeral was held in San Francisco with family arriving from the Coast.
Washington July 1 Republican troops of China have entered Pekin and are momentarily expected to force the abdication of the restored Manchu Emperor Hevan Tung. A cable from the Chinese legation reports President Feng Kwo Chang ordered the arrest of General Chang Tieun, the military leader behind the uprising. Dr Wu Ting Fing, the foreign minister, has resigned.
July 11 report from Petrograd states the Russian general staff ongoing pursuit of the enemy in Galicia. Russian forces captured Holioz, a key to Lemburg, and took 2,000 prisoners and thirty guns. They advanced west of Lomnica and pushed on the Bogorodchan Zolotvin front.
New York July 11 cablegram reports the American steamer Kansan, valued at three million dollars with a two million dollar cargo, has been sunk presumably off the French coast. The fate of the crew of fifty is unknown.
The Carson News notes the Nevada railroad commission is compiling statistics from a jitney report. Based on periods and data from 30 companies and individuals operating as mobile common carriers, it is estimated that the total number of passengers carried by jitneys in Nevada during the period was substantial.
London reports that German forces penetrated British positions in Belgium along a 4400 yard front. The assault reached the Yser river banks near Thesa after a 24 hour bombardment that leveled defenses in the Duns sector near the coast, isolating the area by destroyed bridges.
Red Cross work continues at the high school with sewing classes on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. led by Mrs John Henderson. Surgical dressings class runs Wednesdays at 2 p.m. under Mrs Chas Henderson. Participants can obtain knitting materials at the classes. tfJy26
