London dispatches report growing defection from workers and soldiers under the Bolshevik regime. Causes cited include lack of authority drunkenness and food scarcity as soldiers seek peace while troops refuse to march and resist Ukrainians and Cossacks disarm them.
Nevada School of Industry executive committee votes to dismiss G B Hoag and his wife from manager and teacher posts. Superintendent Kyle withdraws resignation and the school clears Hoag items by December 28 1917 with salary cessation effective December 8 1917 pending notice.
Ottawa reports Wilhjalmur Steffansen and his Arctic expedition party have reached Fort Yukon safely, last heard from in a 1916 letter. Francis G. Newlands Nevada senior senator dies suddenly in the national capital after a brief illness. He collapsed while in his senate office and died at home about two hours later. Born near Natchez Mississippi he rose to prominence as a lawyer and political adviser to Senator Sharon and major California financiers. His death leaves a void in national and state leadership.
The Elko County Red Cross civilian relief committee expands to aid families of deployed service members. Chairman J A Meffride and members pledge sympathetic, material support, recording all information on service members and providing ongoing help to maintain home life and stability.
The American expeditionary force in France celebrated Christmas as a heavy snowstorm roared from the mountains. Despite the wrecked weather, most programs continued indoors with few activities cancelled.
