The engine room was flooding and heavy seas hinder rescue efforts aboard a vessel believed to be a 1900 ton steamer sailing from Philadelphia for London with general cargo.

Consular reports note Chinese silk superiority in quality, yet Japan’s modern processes threaten Chinese trade.
