Washington Aug 29 President Wilson rejects the Pope's peace proposals, deeming them final. He asserts lasting peace must be negotiated through a complete understanding with the German people, not by unstable government guarantees. The note was released to the press last night.
Local residents meet with shale experts Ernest Higgins and G E Holmes who examine beds south of town and discuss a four to five hundred barrel plant for about $1000. They estimate shale yields of 80 to 100 barrels of oil and one third paraffin, promising millions with proper facilities and attracting outside capital.

In Washington on August 29 the senate finance committee backed amendments to the war tax bill proposing to levy over one third of the total about 1.286 billion dollars on war profits. Berlin reports repeated German counter attacks northeast of Frezenberg forcing British withdrawals. The official notice states German forces gained ground under heavy shelling amid a tense frontline near the Yser.
Violent artillery fighting is in progress on the Verdun front between Avoncourt and Hill 304. The Aisne front also reports severe warfare as German reconnoitering forces are repulsed in Couriers Wood in Verdun sector.
A telegram announces the marriage of Arnold Lamberty and Mary Wentling in Cambridge Massachusetts on August 27. Both Elko residents, she is sister of Mrs Henderson and formerly worked in the Western Pacific division superintendent’s office. He later joined the U S radio service and studied wireless telegraphy at Harvard. The couple has many friends in Elko. Claude Womack reports good crops near Mountain City.
