Reports describe widespread destruction from a catastrophic storm across Galveston and surrounding Texas cities. Houston outlines record low barometer, vast property loss, multiple deaths, and crippled communications as rescue efforts proceed and towns including Hitchcock Texas City and Sylvan Beach face severe damage.
A top bout is arranged for Rodeo Week in Elko at the Bradley Opera House likely September 9. Main event features Jack Bratter of Minnesota at 122 pounds against Roy Moore of Petaluma California at 118 pounds. Both are regarded as topnotchers with Bratton as Pacific coast featherweight champion and Moore having victories over Montie Attell.
Joseph O Byrne departs for North Jarbidge to assume management of the Flaxle mining property. The company plans active development and a new mill, with substantial work already done. His brother William, linked to the Salt Lake Tribune, visited and then left for Salt Lake City for a week of rest in Utah mountains.
George M. Southward and Father Meehan leave tomorrow for Jenkins company ranch on Jack Crook in northern Biko. Father Mon than enjoys fishing and hunting a few days and will return via Carlin. Mr. Southward remains in Biko.
A United Press dispatch from London reports General Hamilton stating British forces gained five hundred yards in trench positions at the Dardanelles. A separate Washington incident describes a bizarre train wreck near Rainier with multiple fatalities when a dredger’s steam shovel boom broke free and caused a wreck under a crossing.
Reports to London say German zeppelins raided the east counties last night. Ten civilians were killed and thirty six injured. Zeppelins escaped though anti air craft fire is believed to have damaged one craft. It is presumed they fled toward Kent with Essex most affected. All victims were civilians.
Reports say Leo Frank’s body is traveling to New York for interment with funeral plans not yet arranged. Georgia Governor Harris leads a direct investigation into the Milledgeville prison authorities and the Lynching aftermath. Frank reportedly refused to testify or admit guilt when questioned by leaders of the mob.
County authorities direct the shipment of the companys lambs sold to H Lévy Co San Francisco weekly lamb shipments will be delivered at Carlin and Halteck.
Last evening a fire swept the slaughter pens owned by the Elko Mercantile Co in Allen McBride's field east of town. Most buildings and pens were destroyed with an estimated loss around three thousand dollars, including hides. No insurance was carried. The cause remains unknown, possibly tramp activity or furnace sparks from yesterday's rendering.
United Press reports that the German submarines have sunk two more vessels, the British steamer Benny and the Spanish steamer Isidore, with both crews saved.
Willis Nicholson was held to answer to the grand jury at a preliminary examination before Justice of the Peace Clerk of Tuscarora. His bond was set at 10000, unable to post he remains jailed in Elko. District Attorney Carville prosecuted the case for the state. Nicholson is charged with the murder of One-Round Hogan near White Rock recently.
Washington officials say the Mexican manana is delaying peace replies with no formal response on three days. Carranza is believed to aim to crush Villa before answering amid reported dissent in Villa ranks. Nogales reports Hermosillo, Sonora's capital, captured by Carranza forces.
Hopehull August 18 three Black men released from county jail were seized by a mob and lynched after being arrested on charges of poisoning a mule.
W. H. Compton and Ed Hankins arrived from Los Angeles by car after traveling from Austin about one hundred and sixty miles. They are seeking an opening to enter the cattle business and want a ranch with a good range and about one thousand head of cattle. They plan to inspect the north end of the county.
Mrs. Henderson Dewar aged about forty five, longtime Elko resident, died last evening following valvular heart trouble cerebral embolism and pneumonia. She leaves nine children a husband a sister and two brothers. Funeral set for Presbyterian church tomorrow at two oclock.
J. L. Lindsay, long associated with the forest service, arrived from Jarbidge and noted thriving conditions in his district especially in the mining interests. He observed overall prosperity in the area during his visit.
Berlin reports Kovno captured with forts and war material. over four hundred guns seized after a night storming. The victory is hailed as the most significant since Warsaw, with Austro-German forces near Brest Litovsk and Novo Georgievsk under threat as Hindenburg’s guns shell the forts.
The Tonopah Bonanza denounces Pat McCarran for entering the race as a Democratic U S senator candidate. The Republican paper attacks the Democrat early, critiquing the move as premature and stirring strong partisan reaction from readers and other publications.
Floyd Harman reports a rabid coyote killed on Battle Mountain main street. A resident with no firearm grabbed a neck yoke and struck the animal on the head to end the threat. The event occurred while Harman was in town on mining business.
