Special to The Independent reports the French cruiser Levengambetta was sunk today by an Austrian submarine in the Adriatic Sea. The vessel was a powerful late type warship and its loss is described as great.
A San Antonio dispatch reports Victor B. Innes and his wife, former Nevada deputy U S attorney, won a writ of error application in the U S Supreme Court over extradition to Georgia. They face murder and larceny charges. a prior Texas appeal upheld Judge Anderson, and final action by the high court is months away.
Mrs. Fred Broadwell died suddenly in Amarilla Texas while visiting relatives. Her husband was summoned and on his way to the scene. The brief notice notes the unexpected death during a visit and mentions the couple’s home.

Six year old Tom Jones son of Mrs Katie Jones was run over by a car driven by Charles Reinken on Missouri flat yesterday afternoon. He suffered bruises with no bones broken as he attempted to cross the street. The driver did all possible to avoid the collision and no blame rests on him. The incident is urged as a warning to children to avoid running across streets near schools and to drivers to exercise extreme caution.
The Tonopah miner produced 10 109 tons valued at 207 922 this week. Tonopah Mining annual report shows net income of 1 060 124 with 1 000 000 in dividends.
Special from London reports that German advances toward Calais have been checked and they are now on the defensive. Battles continue with heavy losses on both sides as Germany fields sixty eight ships in the North Sea awaiting a possible major naval clash. E. H. Childs editor of the Contact Miner and C. Eastman manager of the Townale Company visit Elko. They forecast a copper boom as ore will be reduced before transport, placing the camp on the map and signaling large future operations.
Seward Alaska, with a population of 350, is seen as the next boom town after being named seaport terminal for a 35 million dollar government railroad project. Reporters note a flood of prospectors, fortunes for a few, and widespread hope as ships depart Seattle with stampeders bound for Seward.
