Mongolia sinks German submarine in British waters

Captain Rice of the American steamer Mongolia says a naval gun crew fired the first U.S. shot of the war and sank a German U-boat at about one thousand yards. The Mongolia, a 13 000 ton vessel on its second trip to England since February 1, carried U.S. gunners under Lieutenant command and returned to a British port with a periscope shattered and the submarine destroyed.

Tongue Treason May Be Punishable In Nevada

Big Pageantry Planned for Elko May 4th

A large patriotic pageant planned in Elko Nevada for May 4 to honor veterans and students. The event features a monster parade with Civil War and Spanish American War veterans, military cadets, school children, Red Cross members and fraternal groups. A great red white and blue human flag, flag raising by stationed soldiers, a communal meal and a military ball are scheduled. Professor George J. Jensen will lecture on Abraham Lincoln at the flag raising.

Mountain City Killing and Spanish Premier Resignation

Reports state Arthur Bowman and William Davidson were mortally wounded in Mountain City by Dave Kunz with Bowman dying and Davidson dying later. Kunz is detained awaiting sheriff and district attorney. Separate dispatch: Count Romanones says Spain should join the Allies and laments blockade and German propaganda.

British Capture 3000 Prisoners and Reiterate Gains

British forces report taking 3000 prisoners last Monday including 66 officers and capturing Orbithem east of Havicourt wood. Wheat hits new high as futures top records

Chicago markets report wheat futures breaking prior highs with May at 2.48 a bushel and July up 7.75 cents. A Ontario agriculture minister forecast of 4.00 before 2.00 is cited as boosting optimism, while St. Louis records a 3.00 bushel price for immediate delivery.

Wingfield offers Nevada stock farm horses to government

George Wingfield announced that the Nevada stock farm will place breeding services of high class animals at the disposal of the government or owners of suitable mares to boost war horse supply. The offer includes the thoroughbreds Montgomery and Ossany and the Arabian Sey Yid, located near Moana Springs on the Virginia road. Humphrey, W. H. Moffatt, and R. Self stated they already tendered horses for cavalry service and urged cooperative effort to increase good war horses.
