Local travelers report strong sentiment over the obstruction south of Halleck as a makeshift barrier.
Elko County high school held a windy dusty tryout for the Winnemucca Elko meet on the 17th. Records show Clawson and Filippini high jump 5 ft 3 in, Clawson 18 ft 4 in broad jump, Mayer 8 ft 6 in pole vault, Leslie 1:13.5 in 100 yards, Fernald 1:00 in 440, Turner 5:50 in mile, with several others competing. several qualified players will miss the Winnemucca trip due to low scholarships and Reno meets later.
Reno race meetings are planned to begin July 10 under the new pari mutuel commission. R H Dunn of Winnemucca is to be president of the Reno Jockey Club, with Joseph Harlan of San Francisco as vice president and Emory J Arnold of Goldfield as secretary. The meet may open the Saturday after Denver closes on November 4, with up to 200 Denver horses expected and 100 additional boxes added for a 261-box grandstand.
U S Land Office at Elko Nevada will not open tomorrow April 15 due to a presidential proclamation. Land matters scheduled for that date will be continued to the following day, announced by Register John E Robbing.
Carranza troops report heavy blow on Villa forces at Matamoros with Gen Saulo Navarro wounded and Villa dead estimated at 300. Villa artillery shelling briefly renewed, then ceased as garrison returned to trenches. Villa train with armed cars repelled. both sides restrict river crossing for news. Carranza claims 17 killed, 60 wounded, plus prisoners and matériel captured on their side.

Hungarian forces are fleeing in panic as the Russians hammer away at Uzsok Pans the Austro German forces weakened by Russian pressure. German reinforcements arrive but the situation remains unsettled. The French claim progress on the Meuse frontier while official German reports say attacks have been repulsed along the section.
Edwin Gordon Lawrence reports from Europe on Belgium relief. A shipload of provisions sails to Belgium every other day, providing ten ounces per person per day for two days. He notes Belgium’s civil population of about seven and a half million remains hungry, with four million paying in full, one million paying part, and one and a half million receiving gratis aid. Hoover stresses Belgium must be preserved and world support must continue. America’s role is praised, yet warned against complacency as hunger grows.
A. R. McPherven, traveling agent, has set temporary headquarters to start operations May 1 in San Francisco and California points. The Express Co plans to extend coverage nationwide after securing rights over the Denver and Rio Grande and the Western Pacific lines, marking the largest expansion yet.
George Runsell Jr and Superintendent Brooks of the George Runsell Land and Cattle Co went to Halleck this morning on the Western Paine to receive one thousand head of year old steers from Sam McIntyre contracted in fall. The steers will be shipped today to Battle Mountain for the company's ranches. Price per head not published. cattle described as above average and on feed all winter.
President Wilson signed an order directing federal offices to close and the national flag to be flown at half mast on all federal buildings forts ports naval stations and vessels to observe the 20th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's death on April 15. Ship owners and captains are asked to display the national flag at half mast as well.
Rome orders war color as officers dull metal on uniforms and sword scabbards. Following a minister of war warning that mobilization would use public schools to house troops, the municipal council discussed emergency plans. Sessions would continue in hired buildings with women replacing male teachers and women operating street cars and utilities if needed.
Los Angeles reports April 15 that Japanese cruisers have mined and fortified Turtle Bay, four hundred miles south of San Diego, a surprise move stirring government circles. The act fuels suspicions amid wartime tensions and recalls talk of Japan aligning with Mexico in conflict with the United States while eyeing the Philippines, Havalin Islands, and Alaska.
The advance agent of Barnes Circus visits Elko today to arrange a May first performance at the usual site west of the ball park. The company resumes its tour from California winter quarters and plans a local show. Reports of peace talks in Berlin are dismissed as unfounded and ignorant of Germany’s wartime condition. Germany and Austria allegedly hold sufficient supplies to prolong the war indefinitely.
