Special to the Independent from Petrograd reports intensive fighting in the Carpathians. Near the Dukla Uzsok and Lupkov passes Russian forces claim decisive gains, wresting Dukla and Uzsok from Austria. Over 60,000 prisoners captured as Austro Hungarian resistance weakens and German allies retreat toward Hungary.
A message from Brownsville, Texas reports a major clash between Villa and Carranza forces near Guanajuato, about 150 miles inland. Over 40,000 troops are engaged and the battle’s outcome is seen as pivotal to control of Mexico.
A Washington dispatch reports after Food and Drugs Act review that many so called tuberculosis remedies fail to cure and may offer only temporary relief. Analyses exposed cherry balsam as water alcohol and opium mix. Patent plans to mislead buyers through symptom forms and claimed specialist attention are described as deceptive practices.
Major Donn M. Roberts of Terre Haute and 25 others convicted by federal jury in Indianapolis. Most return home until Monday sentencing by Judge Anderson. Officials consider appeals. Government costs cited at about 17000 for trial and witnesses. Only two defendants jailed. potential penalties total up to 26000 in fines and 19 years in prison.
Witnesses before the Interstate Commerce Commission in Chicago testified for forty one western railroads seeking higher livestock rates to sustain lines. They argued cattle hogs and sheep should rise about 3 cents per hundred pounds and horses and mules 6 cents per hundred pounds, citing livestock profitability as a concern. A. A letter from W E Runner urges Elko to schedule games with Palisade and Carlin. Palisade beat Beowawe 2 2 through seven innings, predicts a return at Palisade on Sunday the eighteenth. Carlin plans a Palisade visit on Sunday the eleventh with arc lights claimed for night play.
Washington reports say district courts in Topeka and Arkansas have ruled the migratory bird laws unconstitutional, a decision not binding beyond each district. The act remains in force until the Supreme Court rules. The Agriculture Department will enforce provisions and pursue prosecutions within three years of offenses.
Elko will soon host a new electrical goods store run by Ward Lusk who leaves Elko Lamotle Power Co. He leases part of the Biko Drug Store building and will offer electrical goods including stoves and contract wiring. Lusk is a Nevada State University electrical graduate with Oregon Short Line and SP railroad experience.
The famous detective story appears on screen at the Wigwam tonight with Sherlock Holmes as hero. The plot centers on an heir to the Baskerville estates using a phosphorous dog to frighten victims, followed by Holmes’s methodical unmasking and pursuit of the murderer.
About 500 people are expected to travel on a special Elks and Travelers Protective Association train in July from Goldfield to San Francisco Sacramento Reno and Los Angeles for the grand lodge event. Stops include Tonopah Reno Sacramento San Francisco San Jose and Santa Barbara with hosts in each city providing entertainment and meals. Local lodges are coordinating committees with leaders in Tonopah Carson City and Moon Valley expressing strong enthusiasm.
An unofficial report claims Homer Mooney, veteran editor of the Nevada state Journal, will become editor of the Nevada Democrat succeeding Dicker son who has led the paper since the early issue. Dicker son recently became state police superintendent and penitentiary warden.
Former U S forester Gifford Pinchot acting as special agent for the State Department in the European war zone has been expelled from Belgium by German officials. He reached Antwerp but was blocked from further duties with the American relief commission due to German veto over agents connected to Allied enemies. The State Department plans new assignments for him in the war zone.
Tonight at the Elko High School a program led by Melessa Thompson will include Rebecca of the Sunnybrook Farm plus drama, recitations, impersonations and sketches. Proceeds fund Elko boys’ Reno trip, with emphasis on patriotism and school support.
