Fiercest battle of war now on in the mountains

Special to the Independent from Petrograd dated April 6 reports the fiercest fighting of the war in Galicia and the Carpathians between Russian and Austrian forces. Grand Duke Nicholas says victory in this 600 mile front could end the war, while Russians push to seize Useok and Lupkow passes and the Slavs advance into Hungary, threatening Berlin.

Submarine Sinks British Merchant Ship Northlands in Dover

Special to the Independent reports from Dover that a new German submarine appeared in English waters and sank the small merchant ship Northlands off the coast. The vessel carried wheat and cotton. most crew were rescued by coasters and brought ashore.

Shafter Man Dies of Natural Causes

Shafter on April 6 Jere Murley died Sunday after about two years of ill health. The coroner's jury ruled death from natural causes. Murley, 52, ran a saloon in Shafter and had been bedridden. his brother Thos Murley, a local merchant, cared for him and found him unresponsive in the night.

Women Lead City Registration in Reno Gazette Report
