Elkhart lodge profits from a carnival planned with $3,000 in treasury and a $5,600 to $6,000 net. A stock company may be formed with $25 shares to raise funds to erect and equip a new Elks clubhouse, with no site decided yet.
The will of the late Maria Timmis of Elkhart died August 26 and was probated Saturday. The document apportions property among heirs with trusts for some, naming nephews Chas EB and Lewis Stephens as trustees. About $13,000 in personal property, a 50 year London lease, a Elkhart business block opposite the post office, and Chicago flats compose a $60,000 estate. Charles E. Stephens of Denison Texas was appointed administrator and filed a $26,000 bond.
George Fister reports from Toledo that Elkhart dealers may be tied to a coal trust linking Mishawaka, South Bend, Goshen and Elkhart. He notes Toledo holds ample hard coal at 6.50 a ton, suggesting scarcity in Elkhart and a concerted price system among regional dealers.
Fires in northwestern Oregon and southern Washington continue with unprecedented fury. The blazes destroy lives and devastate small towns as crews struggle to contain the rapid spread.

Also notes Ben is an old soldier and Leroy Essig 15 formerly of Elkhart County dies of diabetes at Studebaker farm in St Joseph County with burial to Goshen.
George Bryson Sam P Perley and W Osgood Orton filed today in South Bend for a franchise to operate an electric railway bridge the St Joe river at Colfax Avenue and post a 5000 forfeiture to prove good faith. The franchise covers part of the Chicago to Elkhart proposed line.
J D Garman driving a milk wagon at State Street crossing was struck by an Elk Hart Western train as it rounded the Y onto Lake Shore tracks. Both horses were killed. one instantly, the other shot after a broken leg. Garman claimed no whistle sounded. railroad men denied the charge. Engine under Joseph Cannon. Wagon damaged.

Transactions involve Lorenzo D Clements Nancy E Stearns John W Fieldhouse Charles E Mick Lucinda A Ford Ammon Hilbish Robert Matthews Grace Fry Alice Hale David O Bressler and Grace E Fry plus Benjamin F Weed and others. Amounts range from 200 to 4600 dollars totaling several parcels including acres and lots.

Etta Hisen sues John B Hisen through attorney EB A Baker in Elkhart circuit court alleging repeated cruelty and inhuman treatment during their 13 year marriage from 1888 to May 1901. She seeks custody of their daughter. Mrs Hisen resides on Hickory Street.
The South Bend Times reports a $75,000 bridge and road franchise tying Colfax avenue over the St Joseph river to a 50 year concession. The plan calls for stone abutments iron trestle approaches a 20 foot driveway and an eight foot footpath with no tracks. Promoters include W Osgood Orton George Orson and Sam P Perley with H E Bucklen of Chicago named as a stakeholder. A $10,000 bond would insure city losses from construction negligence.
News reports that soft coal jumped from 4.50 to 6.00 per ton in the city as hard coal vanished from dealers. A banker with 30 tons of hard coal offered it at 168 per ton to a professional buyer, while dealers warned prices could rise another dollar next week.
Dealers interviewed by a Truth representative condemned the idea of high prices and urged customers not to pay more than normal. They expect coal to flow in soon at affordable rates and pledge to limit purchases to one ton per customer until supply is assured fair access for all.
J. W. Fieldhouse bought a steam driven automobile in South Bend for 1009 dollars. He left this morning with Attorney O. M Canley to take possession and drive the car back to Elkhart. The purchase followed inspections by C. B. Frank and Mr. Cansey. The vehicle includes a top and a steam welder.
Caroline Wolf and husband transfer 80 acres in Jefferson township and 20 acres in Elkhart township to Theo dore A Penland and wife for 6000 dollars. Cenvhas Ganger and wife transfer 40 acres in Olive township to John M Cripe for 2200 dollars.
A bulletin will post today for Lake Shore firemen. Officials will choose all freight, local and switch runs by time card, using a seniority style system. Oldest men receive first pick across pool, local and division runs including Quincy Coldwater Hillsdale and chain gang, awaiting approval after B of L F conference.
Attorneys Conley Frank and Darling filed a remonstrance for several property owners against P A Hamiltons ditch from Wickwire farm along Adamsville road to Christiana Creek near the race track. Viewers earlier reported favorably on the petition but the remonstrance by about half the owners requires a court review to settle the ground.
The pink hue observed across the middle west is attributed to smoke from Oregon and Washington forest fires. Professor Cox cites high altitude, diaphanous smoke lowering temperatures to around 64 degrees, with similar observations in Montana the Dakotas Moosehead Minn St Paul and Duluth.
Detroit on September 17 painter Ernest Mansfield attacked his wife and 14 year old daughter with a meat cleaver. The girl was probably fatally injured while the wife was only slightly hurt.
A garbled dispatch reports Rev Jardimar a colored man, said to be killed in the Boer war, returning alive with his wife and children after undergoing hardships. A second fragment mentions Champaign and an open event at a university in Illinois tied to a jaz?gae.

Sam Straw, a self described leader of the socialist party in Elkhart county, said he believes about 1,500 votes will be polled in the coming state election in the county. He indicated the support would come from across party lines.
Harvey Alery sold to Jacob Biddle a 100 acre farm two miles east of Goshen for 5500 dollars. Attorney A J Hoover conducted the transaction.
W H Sipe of Ligonier Indiana bought another house and lot in Allendale addition through the agency of D H Stevenson Son & Son.
Henry Stauffer father of Mrs. EB A Deugman of Goshen died at 9 30 last night at the home of his daughter Mrs. Adam V Guiss in Napanee.
The two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs B Mishler of the New Paris area died Sunday morning reportedly from cholera infantum. funeral arrangements to follow by local family.

Mrs Matilda Acker aged 82 died at her Syracuse home yesterday. Survived by three children Mrs George Miles Mrs Ed Miles of Syracuse and L Acker of Mississippi a former Goshen resident. She was a Church of God member for 62 years and had lived in Syracuse for 45 years.
