Local Congregational church plans a May 22 vote on a new doctrinal basis that would open church membership to those not fully convinced by core theology. Rev. Ogilvie says the change reflects emphasis on personal relation to Christ and experience over strict doctrinal wording.
Hughes and Arnold for Martin and Ami sue James Shutts and Benjamin Case to recover 62 electric light poles 100000 building brick and 18 door and window frames valued at 1000. Shutts and Case are marshal and constable at Bristol and have levied on the goods to satisfy a claim by Harvey W. Kantz and others.
The Elkhart Brick Co filed articles of incorporation with a capital stock of $100,000 in shares of $160. Incorporators listed are Louis Frank John Frank Frank A Walter Samuel W Kern and Andrew Frank.
George Hassel of Goshen and Lawrence E. Thorne of Elkhart filed applications for saloon licenses. The applications will be considered by the commissioners this week.
Charles Walley appointed guardian of the minor heirs of Merritt M Walley, deceased, of Elkhart. Bond fixed at $3200.
The election proceeds quietly with Democrats confident of Alderman's mayoral win. A marriage license was issued to Edmund Harthill of Elkhart, 28, and Anna Grazer of Elkhart, 21.
John E. Lukens of this city and Jesse L. Heerner of Goshen were chosen as truant officers for their districts by township trustees and school presidents in Goshen. Heerner was re elected over William Bauer 12 to 4. Lukens beat Aaron Work 9 to 7. J S Grosh served as secretary. Annual commencement for country schools set for Island Park Elkhart on Saturday June 7.
Prof. Byers of the Elkhart Institute received a letter from Harvard University authorities stating his scholarship application has favorable action by the faculty. He will spend the next year at Harvard as a candidate for the degree and pursue advanced study under the program.
Mr Byt will stay at the Elkhart Institute until September 15 to assist in organizing next year’s work. After that he will study at Harvard for a year’s graduate work. He has been retained by the Institute for two years to enable a longer course and more college work than before.
A series of transfers recorded across Indiana towns includes S R Hoover selling land in Concord to Leander Garver for 700 dollars, Edward Ortney selling a lot in Elkhart for 500, Evans lot in Goshen for 4000, Ira Osborne selling 40 acres in York for 2600, Thos Hapner to Jacob Wilson and others for Benton land at 5600, Jennie Ball selling in Elkhart for 1, Henry Pletcher dividing 4 000 and 1 for Union acres to Daniel and Susan Pletcher, J D Devor selling 80 acres in Concord for 6600, Matilda Ott selling 18 acres in Benton for 1100, and M W Rood selling in Elkhart for 1. All transfers list varied buyers, sellers, locations and price figures.
The funeral will be Friday morning at St Patrick's church with Cardinal Gibbons and other clergy officiating. Archbishop Ryan is expected to deliver the funeral oration. Remains to be interred in a vault under the cathedral altar. mass for the dead was said earlier and embalming completed.
A strange man harassing Miss Clara Smith on Beardsley Avenue prompted a police call at 11 PM. Local youths chased the intruder through the neighborhood but could not catch him. Superintendent Silvers suspects a deranged, harmless man with a mania for female company and an effort will be made to locate him.
George H. Steyer a life convict died in the Michigan City prison after amassing 6000 in government bonds through overtime work No heirs found and authorities say relatives may live near Cincinnati Steyer was sentenced from Marion county in 1884 No such name appears in the city directory
The court holds that when an insurance policy requires appraisal by two appraisers and a third by them, no suit may be filed until appraisal is made. Disagreement or failure to agree between the two appraisers or on the third appraiser does not affect the requirement. Question arose in Vernon Insurance company vs Richard B Maiden after a fire at Dunkirk Indiana. Maiden sued after the assessor dispute over local versus distant appraisers led to a judgment of 590 dollars, later reversed by the supreme court.
South of Goshen Dunkards hold meetings at Kinney Schoolhouse with West Fetters as usher. Several local residents, including Mr. and Mrs. Jake King of Elkhart, visit relatives near Zion over the weekend. Myrtle Curtis returns from Elk hart visit, and Myrtle's sheep and farm tasks are noted along with other local movements and visits.
Pet Brown a prisoner at the city workhouse is accused of stealing a ring from a fellow inmate in the cellhouse last night. Six inmates testified they saw Brown with the ring but no ring was found on his person after a thorough search. An affidavit for larceny will be filed and he will be arraigned in the city court.
Severe storm wind and lightning damaged Watch Tower Evangelical church at Hickory street tearing the steeple and roof area but caused no fire. A chimney fell at Ninth and Mason, trees were uprooted at Second and Harrison and in front of C T Greene’s home on Second street. Clark Defoe’s porch was torn loose at 405 Sherman street.
At the White House it is stated no authorization exists for President Roosevelt to approve awarding the Legion of Honor to Admiral Dewey and General Miles for the Rochambeau statue unveiling. The decision rests with Congress, not the presidency.
Greene leads with a clear majority as Campbell and Raymer win. The vote marks a rebuke to Walter Brown and signals a shift against his influence in Elkhart county. Eleven Republican councilmen win while Democrats gain little, with Water company interests seen as a major factor.

Thomas Pickerell owner driver of a milk wagon was struck by L B. & W. engine 264 led by Engineer Teddy Mee at the Jackson street crossing. The wagon was crushed in two with milk money tickets and bottles scattered. Pickerell suffered bruises and cuts while his black mare only had leg scratches. He estimates losses at 250 dollars.
