Cleveland officials report 159 corpses in the morgue with 20 more feared dead in the North Collinwood fire totaling up to 180. Bertha Robinson survives after attempting suicide following her two daughters' deaths.
Residents of Elk heart's Fourth ward petition the common council to start litigation against Jonathan Morris for operating a saloon in a residential district under ordinance No. 207. The council delays action and refers the petition to City Attorney Turner, citing the legal question and requiring council sanction.
Charles Baker of Chicago, traveling salesman, witnessed the Collinwood fire and described desperate cries, mothers screams, and deserted shops. He traveled to Elkhart, then to Chicago, and required help boarding the Lake Shore train due to near collapse.
